How do you get the rock pegs out properly and easily? I've used some once (alongside my cheaper, regular pegs which are now all bent...) and have now bought more. But a regular peg puller (cheap version anyway) does not seem to be strong enough/suitable to pull them out

Advice appreciated!

Use a claw hammer to pull them out (or a small crow bar, but a hammer with a wide claw should do it).

When I first started (only last year) I used the pegs that came with the tent without too many issues. The odd bent peg, but not too bad.

This year we bought the extension that goes with our tent. This came with slightly thinner pegs than the ones that came with the tent. One trip to a new camp site with stoney ground and half of the extension pegs and a quater of the main tent pegs bent beyond meaningful repair.

After this trip I bought three boxes of rock pegs to replace the wire ones. The are so much easier to bang in and, using a claw hammer, a lot less effort to pull out again. So far I have only managed to bend one of these, and that was trying to get it out of the ground before I started using a claw hammer.

I have also tried some bright yellow plastic ones, but after having some of these shatter (being hit with a wooden mallet) I have given up on these too.

I don't keep pegs (or guys) with any of my tents / awnings / windbreaks now. I have a box full of mostly rock pegs with a few others for specific jobs (wire pegs for pegging out the footprint, etc). The box also holds guys, a rubber mallet, a wooden mallet and a claw hammer as well as some misc. repair tools; gaffa tape, patches, penknife etc.

I haven't tried the rock pegs on loose, sandy soil though. This might be where the wider plastic pegs work better.

I use the rock pegs with the threaded stems and I have rarely had much trouble getting them out with a normal peg puller. Being threaded an anticlockwise twist normally releases the stubborn ones, but you must make sure you pull them out at the same angle they went in otherwise you will struggle as they obviously aren't intended to pull out at any other angle.

My last trip was probably the worst with regards to pulling them out. They weren't particularly difficult but when placing the peg puller under the shorter hook a couple of the hooks snapped off. I have put this down to a poorer quality rock peg I seem to have bought recently and these will in future be replaced with ones I originally used to buy.

The ones I have now have red heads whereas the ones I always bought previously had orange heads and they seemed to be much stronger.

I find the cheap plastic mallets make great rock peg pullers. The slot in the handle fits the hook and the mallet head gives grip. Hopeless as mallets though.
My peg bag only has rock pegs and v pegs in it plus lump hammer, rubber mallet, claw hammer and aforementioned plastic job.
I have tons of wire pegs but never use them. For footprints I have rock pegs with washers on them and a pull string. The footprint pegs are rubbish on hard ground.

I opened up the groove in a claw hammer with a grinder, failing that a pair of mole grips are pretty good
