I think there will always be an issue when putting the tap in the cap...

..and looking at that cap, it doesn't appear to be of a type that allows the spout be rotated?...not without "loosening" the whole thing?...

(..so maybe it's been inadvertently "loosened" in order to line it up when the cap is tightened?...)

Yes the spout can be rotated within the blue housing. It does not loosen or tighten. The black part inside the cap, that joins to the tap, is almost moulded on. We can't see any way to separate the two, they don't unscrew.

Does anyone know of a plastic can that has a tap fitted directly?

I asked Go outdoors when I took our other one back, they just directed me to the metal ones (usually used for petrol/diesel)

Oh, I see!..so the tap and the cap a manufactured as one "unit" then(..and it's leaking through the "swivel)...

We've had two plastic "jerry cans" with the taps in the side, like this:

http://www.charliesdirect.co.uk/camping-water-carrier-with-tap-10-litre

...but they haven't always trouble free, as one of them would leak every now and then(..at least with yours, the actual container is "sealed").

Others on ebay:

We get round it by just tipping the can upright so the tap is on top when not in use.

It really does come apart. I had this precise cap on my water container and replaced it with a water butt tap from countrywide. Cost £5

The black ring with the concave finger grips is just threaded onto the white inner. You may need a pair of long nose pliers to get some purchase on the nut but it really does just come apart.

We had no end of similar trouble when we first started kitting ourselves out. Think we tried 5 different water carriers, and had leaks to each one.
In the end, we tried one of These, and I swear, we haven't looked back!!

OK, I admit there's only the two of us, and don't use a great deal (Just the odd cuppa, and instant porridge/soup/pasta in the colder months). The added bonus, in my eyes, is that we tend to re-fill once a day, so more fresh water, rather than lying in the sun for days on end!

We pick a new one up each time we set off (About 10am this morning, as it happens! ) and dispose/recycle as we leave site.
Not the most planet friendly option, I concede, but in a selfish way, it works for us.

Thanks for all the replies, it's good to know it's not just us who has had troubles!

Mucker, there are five of us, and we have one son who is very clumsy! We find that it's easier for him to make his own drink when we have the water can on the kitchen stand and all he has to do is turn the tap on and off. We do take those 5l ones on a day out in the car though.

Forty-two, I will get the pliers out and have a go at removing the tap on one of our old lids. Then I can still take the complete, newest can back to Attwools for a refund.

Success!

OH used long nosed pikers to remove the black threaded screw from the one leaking in the pic, (very, very tight) then unassembled another identical tap that leaked from a different place. He put all the good parts together and we now have a working, leak free tap!!
