It is a difficult one because I appreciate that the electrical system has to be paid for and maintained although I would have thought that was all accounted for within the overall expenses of running a campsite. When people pay extra for a pitch with EHU that really should just be for the actual electricity used.

The 3kw will trip your ehu, these are usually 10amps, even tho the site hook up may be 16amps.
A 2kw heater is more than adequate in a 5/6 berth tent and will give off plenty of heat.
Just go for a cheap brand, they're all the same really.

Another vote for the 2kw cheap fan heater. Ours is from aldi and was about £10. We have a large 6 man tent and warms the tent up a treat. Theres no need to spend large amounts of money on a heater in my opinion.

i have found a dimplex daisy (also the dimplex footie fan, same model different coat) have been the best.
i say this as i work for them, therefore i have had plenty to test ;)

The problem with that is that, if the cost of EHU provision is incorporated in the overall site expenses, people who do not use EHU would be paying higher overnight charges than necessary and subsidising EHU users.

You could say that but then people who have caravans for instance and don't use the site facilities are subsidising all the rest. The campsite tariff usually covers the total cost of running the site no matter what the site's various overheads are, but actual electricity usage has to be charged separately because not everyone uses it.

Not sure electric has to be charged separately...

Our latest find is a lovely site that charges one price per pitch, which includes EHU. Last time we went, we neither got, nor expected, any form of reduction due to us not requiring EHU.
I consider that fair, but only in the sense that we knew what to expect, and that we were still happy to pay the inclusive price.

It also looks like the place we are heading to in France next month charges pitch inc. EHU... Although this time, we will be using it.

Still say the fairest of fair ways to do it though, is like Beech Croft Farm... on a meter card, on a PAYG basis. We paid about £1.60 for two nights in October, inc. fan heater going all evening. (On the tent field, that is... the caravan/hard standings include EHU in the pitch price).

Sorry I don't want to hijack the thread but it might be useful, has anyone considered an electric greenhouse heater?, I would have thought they would be safer and a lot more efficient on energy, so you can keep most things plugged in.

I Googled greenhouse fan heaters, and from the description of one product, I concluded it is effectively a fan heater in green.

I have seen that one too, I have seen the tubular heaters that are used in greenhouses and are about 1m long and 120w.

We use a greenhouse fan heater, primarily as they tend to have a better IP rating for water ingress than those designed for use in a house. Ours is quite noisy but is only used for chilly evenings and early mornings; we would never leave it running overnight.

I don't think the tubular ones would be much use in a tent. We have one in our airing cupboard to try and substitute for the hot water tank that was removed when the boiler was replaced. It does a reasonable job in the very small enclosed space but I can't see it being much good in a ventilated thin-walled plastic bag.
