We have an extra wide version of the wire leg type camp beds topped with a 2.5 SIM. I found the standard width one's too narrow. Since the beds are quite low they fit well in to tents bedroom pods with sloping walls.

Our sleeping bags are 3-4 season and the type that can unzip and open out to be used like a blanket during warmer weather.

It's a lovely comfortable combination.. only minor complaint with the bed is that you need a little strength to get the wire legs slotted in - but otherwise simple to put together.

Self inflating mat on the inner groundsheet. A decent self inflating mat needs no extra insulation and it's the quickest item to set up and takes up least space in the car.

It doesn't have to be an expensive option either, my kids use the standard £12 Hi Gear ones, Hubby and I have two 5" cm ones that came from Aldi a few years ago, they're 80cm wide instead of 70cm.

I never thought I'd like SIMS btw, I imagined them as too basic and as I have two badly damaged discs I thought I might find them not pagged enough or too difficult to get off the floor. Well, I have eaten my words, a SIM is far warmer than an airbed and more comfortable too. It's no more difficult to get off a SIM than an airbed either. (I can't do campbeds, they're entirely the wrong height for me to get up off, I have to get down on the floor first.)

And the speed of set up for a SIM is unparalleled. You take it out the bag, open the valve and throw it into position on the floor with the sleeping bag on top. At some point before you go to bed you close the valve. That's it. I took a friend camping this weekend and she asked for an airbed, I needed a mat for under it plus a fleece and fitted sheet for the top, it took me ten minutes to assemble this bed including blow up the airbed. Bloomin' faff.

What is your favourite thing to sleep on in your tent? Air bed etc....

Just bought our first tent but no accessories yet so wondering which type of bed to buy.

Our 1st full year camping & have sold our standard camping beds, so uncomfortable & bought via ebay a double airbed with inbuilt electric motor, that inflates or deflates in minutes, its a double height bed too & soooo comfortable, like every airbed you do lose a little of the inflation & therefore have to 'top up' every other day or so. But at £37.95 its a fab buy!.
