I have been using the tom tom caravan &camper for 2 years and found it a great piece of kit and the come with free life time map updates, pricey but a great sant present 😘
I'll echo the above post. OH bought ours just over a year ago when we were planning a trip to France and it works just fine. Yes, the updates will always be free.
Thanks all, a big plus point getting free map updates, we are often motoring 'off course' where the map updates haven't been carried out as they are so expensive.
Google maps navigation has come along a lot since they purchased the navigation company 'Waze' about a year ago. I was using it last night on my phone coming home from London. It was loads better than the Garmin stuck to the screen as it was giving real time traffic delays with suggested alternative routes and their times marked on the map. The road ahead goes yellow, or worse red if there is a delay.
It's my opinion that dedicated sat navs are being left behind, I can't really see a future for them.
Also it worked brilliantly through France last month, you can zoom up quickly and always see exactly where you are.
Maps still work but the navigation needs a data connection. Three network regards france and some other countries the same as uk so the data just comes out of your monthly allowance
I don't use mobiles for navigation. My original reply concerned TomTom Satnavs and the originators message concerned TomTom SatNavs. Mobiles tend to not work in rural areas even 2G is dodgy where we live.
With good satnav apps on your mobile you don't need a connection as they are standalone apps. Getting a connection on the move does improve everything as then up to date traffic warnings will be received and also the satnav hub receives information back from the phone which helps them with their traffic knowledge. Thats why Nokia give away their traffic app 'here' for free.
Even with 'caravan and truck' satnavs they are never infallible and even then no connection can mean diversions play havoc with routes.
