That trick also reduces the efficiency of the fuel by about 10%. Sooting not such a problem with modern meths or bio-ethanol.

Even so - black pans are more efficient. Some people don't like to get soot on their hands or gear. Best not to be so precious in the great outdoors I say.

Think you and I have had this discussion before about "soot" and I think we disagreed then.

You are right about Trangia being less efficient when you add water. I and many others have been doing it for years, never really in that big a rush to benefit from eating my food or having a brew a minute or two sooner.
Equally many do it your way and we are both right as we are doing it our way.

The soot is another preference, you either live with it or you don't. I prefer not to and it doesn't make me any more/less precious about my gear or the great outdoors or having black hands throughout the trip.

Its all down to personal choice and we are both right as I said and we both end up eating and drinking from the same type of stove/fuel but I and my kit will be cleaner

Tried other methods but always revert to our good old trangia. We even converted it to gas at one point but are now back to the liquid fuel. It is quick and efficient and packs away very tidyly. It along with our Bushpig BBQ are the ideal combination. ( By the way it is nearly 30 years old !!!!)

I spent 4 months cycle camping through France with one of these.
I got fed up with the meths being so slow and difficult to control, so changed to the gas burner.
That made it much more usable, plus the screw connection on the gas bottle means new gas bottles are very easy to find. You don't need a camping shop, a hardware store will sell screw top gas bottles for things like blow torches and they fit just as well.

I have now dumped the rest of it and just use a free standing gas stove under the Trangia pots, plus a small foldable windshield. Lighter and more compact, both of which are very important when you have to carry it on a bicycle.

clone for me with a trangia burner. As meths is getting hard to come by where I live, I've an edelrid hexxon with an adapter. Now I can use meths, petrol, Kero and gas. Suits me.
