My children sleep on roll mats on the floor. They sleep fine (although less talking when they go to bed would be nice!).

My 7 year old regularly rolls off the mat and pulls the sleeping bag down to his waist so is effectively sleeping on the tent floor. He sleeps all night. Kids are very resilient!

We use Outwell SIMS which we are happy with. Last year we got 7.5cm ones but I have given those to the kids and upgraded to 10cm, I haven't tried these yet so don't know if there is much difference.
Ours don't fasten together but we have a strap called a 'Universal Couple Kit' (it's Thermarest but fits our Outwells) that goes around both of the mats and keeps them together so they don't slide apart. I think it is better having the two singles, as you aren't disturbed by the other person moving and also I have heard other people say that the doubles are harder to roll up.

Update to my July 2015! post on this thread.

The "ThermaRest DreamTime XL" has now been brought back into production, due to popular demand.

Just remember to take your weight into consideration when buying a SIM or Air type mattress, Neoair, Exped etc. The heavier you are the more you will compress the mat and probably be less comfortable, so a thicker mat might be better. Especially if you sleep on your side, rather than on your back.

We started with Aerobed inflatables which all got splits in recessed seams, but they were quite good. We then upgraded to 7.5cm Vango's, 2 singles for the kids & a double for us, they are fantastically comfortable, however they have all suffered with leaking around the valves. Despite trying several different repairs, they still leak. We looked at all of the ones stocked by our large independent camping shop & GoOutdoors, they all had potential quality issues to the point that we didn't want to make the same expensive mistake again.

Thermarest was recommended but we haven't actually seen one, so a bit nervous to invest.

Been using our ThermaRest DreamTime XL's since 2008, they just do what it says on the tin.

Hi We went away last month and for the first time used Thermarest Luxurymap SIMS and they are so comfortable.     Picked this model after reading great comments on this site from others, and having read how long thermarest mats have lasted for people, so figured it was a reliable brand to go with.

Vango's 10cm confort double gets my vote. Used one recently in Exmoor on uneven ground and it was very comfy and easy to pack up again. Not cheap, but after looking at a few, it was the best made and looks like it will last, unlike every air bed we've ever used.

Kids had cheap mats but now have cheap mats on cheap camp beds! They sleep better and we can hide their mess under the beds.

Hi, we have Alpkip Dozers which we strap together with a thermarest down which is like a thin duvet shaped like a fitted sheet round both with a strap. Honestly the best bit of our camping equipment (and we have a LOT of camping equipment). Bought them about 5 years ago and they are like new, pack away well and from what I can remember the service was great. Would definitely recommend!

After years and years of rubberised cotton air beds at £25+ a time (and most seemed to only manage one holiday before getting binned for leaking) I bought an Exped Megamat and my wife got an Outwell Dreamboat...both incredibly comfortable and well worth the investment...they just don't leak and totally transform your comfort levels when sleeping. They are expensive but are worth it beyond question. Kids say the Exped is the best of the two.
