Just be careful of how hot they get when left on for a while. If they are hot you need to keep them a suitable distance from the tent fabric etc.

An inspection lamp is a good alternative as well

I use a non-IP rated work lamp inside the tent, and one of these LED inspection lamp that is rechargeable on the outside in the kitchen area.

I used to use an IP-rated work lamp outside, however, not with the new tent as it does not have any suitable haning point.

We use an Outwell Leonis. It can go pretty bright, has a built in dimmer, plenty of cable and folds into almost nothing for packing away

I thought I would resurrect this thread again, especially in relation to tent lights getting hot.

Until now I have always used an ordinary table lamp with an energy saving bulb which gets quite hot. On my last trip I realised (must have been sober) that with the table lamp on a table in one corner of the living area there were large shadows where the light didn't reach. When I held the table lamp at roof height the whole of the living area was lit much better. Also, with having the table lamp close to the front wall of my tent, which is white, it acted like a moth trap and there were enough insects on the front of my tent to keep David Bellamy amused for hours.

So, I am looking for a bright light for EHU which I can hang from the roof of my tent. The problem is that the hook for hanging lights is at the top of the inner tent, so that any naked bulb hanging on it would touch the inner and could melt a hole in it.

Any suggestions for 'cool' lamps (even LED light bulbs get hot at the base) and also, does the bulkhead lamp linked to in this thread get hot because I could clip one of those to an inner ridge rail?

Any advice gratefully received.

The bulkhead lantern that I made, hangs in the middle of the tent, next to the bedroom pod, and the one in the kitchen tent rests against the canvas at it hangs from above.

The 100watt (1400 Lumens) Halogen regular style BC bulb that is used, obviously gets hot when at full tilt, but due to the size of the enclosure does not present a problem as the heat is well dissipated.

Most of the time though, the unit is dimmed to about 25% capacity, which is still around 35watt in old money or 370 Lumens, in fact when the Halogen bulb conks out I will will replace with a 70watt (1000 Lumen) unit.

The light hook in my tent is sewn into the same place as the central strap that holds the inner tent up so any light hanging from it will rest against the inner tent. Not a good place for a hanging light.

However, on both sides of the roof at it's junction with the walls are stretcher poles which run from the rear corners to the front corners inside the tent helping to keep the material between the roof poles taut and giving added rigidity to the tent. It would be easy to hang a light on these by 'C' clips providing no heat can touch the flysheet.

Bob.
How about one of those clip on light holders? Clipped onto the bedroom toggle strap, low enough to avoid the tent roof, but sticking at horizontally, thus avoiding the bedroom material.

I don't have a pic of the one we used to use, but I do have a video (showing high winds, specifically) that shows the lamp, and the position I mean. Fast forward to 40secs or so...

Video...

(Ignore the camping lamp... that was just stored there out of the way... it got used as a night light, next to the bucket!)

Admittedly, this particular lamp only had about 1m lead to it, so used in conjunction with a bog standard domestic extension lead, the plug/socket joint laid against the outside of the bedroom wall, about chest height. No idea whether you can get them with longer leads?

Thank you, that might work or I may even be able to clip it to the roof poles. It wouldn't be too big a job to extend the cable with a joint plug, or socket, or whatever they are called (don't want to upset the leccies again)

Incidentally I looked at your other videos in that link showing wind swept tents...one reason why I changed from fibreglass poles to metal. It is no fun sitting in a tent with hoops that are swaying dramatically from side to side.

Our friends laughed at the amount of homely gear we camped with. So we took an standard lamp and bought a lampshade from a charity shop. The joke back fired it was a brilliant light, and was the first item packed after that

Why didn't I think of that...I have just flogged a tall standard lamp on Gumtree
