I hope you don't mind me saying but I can see why he is an 'ex'.
My tent has never been so neatly pitched since though!
The measuring was barely the half of it. The camping box included a myriad of neatly sawn squares of plywood of various thicknesses, used for levelling up the tables. These have been jettisoned and I cope fine with my pans occasionally having a deep end. He even took a small spirit level!
The ex also had a windbreak obsession, and would spend hours making sure the wooden poles were firmly banged in and readjusting the configuration of the things every damn day. I don't even know where they are now. He used to insist on bringing his acoustic guitar on every trip, and I spent most evenings worrying in case one of the dogs knocked it over and damaged it. The present Mr Fran is blissfully unmusical.
TPMF thinks the set up is done when we have a tent up, a bed to lie on and can boil a kettle. He's not fussed about anything else. And we've never had the traditional tent pitching row!
He's a bit slack about rolling it up tight enough to get it back in its bag, though. I suppose you can't have it all ways.
I love and care for my kit. I haven't bought cheap but I intend to make it last.
As important as the kit is, I clean it all thoroughly when we come home and it is a sight to see, all spread out, outside the house hosed and scrubbed, drying in the sun.
I will put it all on ebay when I am done and hopefully recoup some of my money to spend on a bathchair!
Or else off to the dump because it has finally given up.

Taking a spirit level? Whatever next!
...I just use the one in my iphone!
I use the one on my iPhone too, not for tent pitching but for checking the bed - I really hate sleeping 'across' a slope, it's not always easy to tell but it can lead to an uncomfortable nights sleep.
Mmmm, I'm quite liking the wooden discs for under wonky table legs...(I admit that's a pet hate) it's a slippery slope.... maybe I need the spirit level app too...

The bits of wood won't help if the slope is slippery ...
