The hologen heater sounds expensive but I might have a look at it before I whip down to Woolies.  Do you know how much they are and where I could look at one.

Thanks

Amazon.co.uk sell halogen heaters for around £16.  Been looking at getting one myself.

We've only ever been camping twice so far and actually we've been warm enough.  I'm just thinking ahead to those moments when you need a little boost - you know, when the wine's run out and the rains pouring down.  My husband's not exactly 'camper of the year' so though it might pacify him a little too. (obviously my charm doesn't do the trick anymore)!

I've been looking on ebay, there are some strange looking contraptions being sold as heaters.  I wonder how safe they are?

hi all we had a fan heater from argos £9.99 when we had our tent and now use it in our awning it works well is quiet and can also work as a cold air fan if we're lucky enough to be away in warm weather !!!!!!!!!!

i think an ehu is a worthwhile investment as you can have a heater and small fridge working and when you add up the cost (ehu on ebay for less that £20 some even cheaper) against the cost of gas and cartridges you have to buy regularly and the extra cost of gas heaters you will probably save money in the long run. I agree with what people are saying about leaving things on because you have paid for an ehu but the heater we have has variable heat settings and i am sure if it is run on low all night it does not cost anymore than most caravanners who probably run their blown air heating through the night and there is a standard charge for ehu on most sites so tenters will probably be using far less overall.

hope this helps

Thanks Alyson.  We didn't really want to do an ehu but it does make sense.  I guess being new to camping I'll have to learn the hard way - that is a few more camping trips and then I'll be plugging in!

I did the sums once ( as I did not want think I was using more electric than I had paid for ) and the amount charged for electric more than covers having a heater on 1KW all night on a thermostat setting...so it actually goes on and off, rather than being on continually.

Fan heaters are noisy though.  And the halogen heaters you get the light...and if you want it on all night, the light might be disturbing.  We're trying a convector heater next time on timer for cooler nights.

It's one of those controversial topics...but, personally, I could not camp if I could not have my EHU and heater.  The camping experience doesn't have to be compromised just because you take a couple of home comforts...although we would not take t.v, dvd, laptops....other people do and that is their perogative....and if it adds to the comfort and enjoyment of the family holiday then so be it.  Each to his own.  We couldn't afford to stay in b&bs or hotels and for us camping is as much about economics as it is about fun...at the end of the day camping with a family is damn hard work at times...especially for the mothers...a warm cosy nights sleep and waking up to an overall warm tent is extremely high value to me personally !

we started camping for real last year and have just bought ehu for this year.   we got our fan heater from argos for 12.99  we love getting away from it all and don't feel it comprimises that. it just allows us to do it for longer!  we have three dogs and a child who unlike when she is at home wakes up every morning in the tent with a massive smile on her face.  we all just love it!!!

Camping is about freedom and personal choice. I dont have a problem with anyone having a heater on all night, 1kw heaters cost pennies to run per hour so the high charge you pay more than covers it, although purely from a safety point of view i would'nt sleep with a high fire risk like that. perhaps you could take a sharp knife to bed with you for a quick getaway. I like this new idea that all campers should have a red fire bucket outside their tent. however you like your camping, enjoy it and stay safe...........simon

I can feel a ehu coming on!

Someone gave me the blue pluggy thing and said attach it to a cable.   Does anyone know if this would be safe or do I need to get the proper waterproof socket bit, etc?

Personally I wouldn't attach a pluggy thing to a cable !.....buy the whole kit and kaboodle from a respected camping retailer...such as towsure.  I certainly would never entertain the idea of using electric in the tent without the real macoy - RCDs/trips etc, etc....and also up to date electrical items in the tent itself which also have overheat cut out/ tip safety features...ie no dodgy second hand fan heaters !
