Hi Deborah,
I've been looking at the 25l Icey Tek, from the youtube vids the catches look a bit flimsy and easy to snap, but I guess if you've had your's for five years, that isn't the case.

Leave only footprints, take only pictures and memories. There is no bad weather only bad gear.

We've only had ours a year, but so far the catches seem sturdy, have never felt like I'm going to snap them.

Hi Yorci, The catches are really sturdy, made of thick rubber or silicone I think. They don’t seem remotely snappable!

Frazzle - I take plastic food containers to hold cheese and butter and other stuff to stop it sitting in water (not nice I agree)... but fine for drinks. I cover the hardier goods and ice blocks with bubble wrap and place my salad veg in bags on top to stop it freezing and going soggy. Given a good freezer for the blocks, It think the passive coolers such as Coleman Extreme (my own), Igloo, and Icey-Tek (cool in both meanings) are great. Our cheapo thermo-electric doesn't really compare. I left it outside in the Ardeche but not an option for when it rains...

Do campers 'peg it'?

When camping learn to buy fresh and eat it fast, or to buy and keep dried and canned food for emergencies (when the shops are shut).

Bridgeywidge, I could have a box for cheese in our Extreme but it is easier to leave the cheese near the top of the box. It is never used for sandwiches/rolls as it would be warm cheese but used for topping chilli when I find a large chunk needs to be grated - it disappears before the meal often during grating (I think I'm the only one who does not eat it then).

I like the bubble wrap and bags for salad stuff - thank you... I'll use that idea.

When in France we hire a fridge - it is often outside the tent. We do cover it if rain is due and of course make sure the plug connectors are covered.

With 3 kids under 10 I am really fed up with our coolbox which needs ice blocks replaced every day. Last week on a lovely campsite in Surrey they did not have any ice blocks/freezers for us to use, so we had to do without. I bought milk every day which kept until the following morning as the nights were cool but you could still taste it going off. We used warm cheese. The mayo and butter went quick. I have given up on non-powered cool boxes.

I will always go to an electrical pitch and so am going to buy a powered fridge. Especially as we are going to France this year and the cost to hire one for two weeks is the same as buying one!

I'm going to see if I can get one which runs off the 12v car for the journey then the mains on site. Think I saw one of those, but failing that its fine to get a mains one only.
