Without going into too much detail, poo often has a high fat content and that makes it difficult to break down without surfactants to speed things up or mechanical action (shaking the cassette). I normally put a glug of bio washing liquid in the cassette to help things along the way and it has the added benefit of keeping the inside of the cassette clean. Everyone has their own way of doing things so just find a method/chemical system that works for you.

It's one of those topics whereby some campsites wanted to encourage people to go green so they decided to convert to green chemicals instead merely because the blue chemicals are supposed to be more harmful to the environment. However, I have heard in some cases that some campsites have decided to revert back to the blue chemicals again because the green fluid wasn't breaking down the waste as quick as the blue and were known to clog up the sewage system. So you have followed the green chemical instructions and haven't actually done anything wrong, it's just that from the tales I've heard it's obvious that the product is not really fit for purpose. I've never used the green fluid because judging by forums like this and general conversation on the campsites I haven't heard any positive comments yet from anyone that HAS used the stuff.

If the site has a septic tank it can't go back to letting blue stuff be put in it, the Formaldehyde in the blue stuff kills the good waste eating bacteria.

And to say that Elsan Organic is not fit for purpose is a rather broad sweeping statement without scientific base.

Not ALL blue fluids are equal! Some are not formaldehyde based, and can be safely used in septic tanks.

Elsan SuperKem, which is coloured 'blue', seems to tick a lot of 'green' boxes, in fact I can't see a negative quality about it, it also appears to be one of the most effective fluids on the market from my personal experience and comments from others that use it. It's concentrated, so no large containers to store and economical in use, you can use it in the flush tank as well, as a final benefit I've never had the 'black algae' problem you get with pink flush tank fluids.

I sound like a sales pitch! But it's just personal experience of a product that seems superior to many others on the market, and would likely serve others equally well.

At the recommended concentration it didn't dissolve a turd in 5 days.   That'll do me!

Through good fortune & timing we'd never used our Thetford for solid waste. That changed this week when we had a new bathroom put in & put the portapotti to use.   In use - great, no smell. Happy with that.
Emptying after 5 days - very surprised solids hadn't broken down. Used Elsan organic fluid & followed instructions to the letter.   Is this fluid any good? Do I need to make it stronger? Other suggestions?

Thanks

Hi we have used all sorts of brands for the waste tank in our caravan ...then tried Thetford Blue and haven't used anything else since...Also use thetford toilet paper .. yes it more expensive than supermarket / Aldi prices but everything dissolves very quickly. Just make sure that you have some clean water in the waste tank before adding the blue liquid

Try Aldi bio washing fluid pods, cheap, smell good, dissolve anything. They are pure bio action, safe for tanks, and really easy to use, just throw one in the tank after you previously emptied.
