I hate plastic mugs so have two pottery ones for tea. The rest of the main crockery is melamine and came from Sainsburys a few years back, from the picnic/barbecue section. Plastic handled cutlery from Ikea. All cheap and cheerful...and still looks pretty good despite Hubby`s washing up technique.
I also got the kids a set each of bowl, plate and cup from Poundland for the camping kit three years ago. (A surfer dude theme for my son and a pink mermaid for my girl. )They thought this was a great camping present, lol! It still looks as good as new. I wonder if they`ll still be using it when they`re hulking great teenagers?
I was looking at getting a new set last year but it can be real expencive, at the end of the summer I got a pack from tesco in the sale section only cost a couple of quid and ive been using it ever since.
I was really lucky and got a complete set of melamine - six of everything. Dinner plates, side plates, mugs, cereal bowls and serving dishes for a fiver in our local charity shop. When I got it home and had a close look I noticed it had "dishwasher safe" on the bottom. Put the whole lot in the dishwasher. Brilliant! Best bargain I have ever had.
When we come back from our weekends away I always put the mugs in the dishwasher and all tea stains are gone.
I doubt that I will come across any more bargains as good as that one.
Our son bought us a full set of melamine VW plates, saucers, bowls , etc etc. for Christmas gone , from Justkampers, and we have had three bowls fall too bits, and two mugs ,

You tried your best
and failed MISERABLY.
The lesson is : NEVER TRY .
We use earthenware crockery (how could we use any other, living next to The Potteries) chose a set which was light in weight. Never had an item break in three years and no problems with cleaning! China is a really good option but a little on the expensive side.
As of yet I've never dropped a piece of of china crockery on to either grass or a carpeted wooden floor to see it break, but yet we all keep on buying melamine, us included, but why dont we just buy china ???
we have been using the same melemine plates dishes for 15 plus years and its still like new. the mugs are the only thing i didnt like they stain easily. so we use china mugs.they are cheap enough if they break. buy nice ones from camping/caravan shops. at the end of season you may find a bargain. if they are changing for a new line.
I don't think it's the fear of dropping it on the floor that makes me want melamine - after all I am just as likely to drop it on the floor at home. It's the thought of it all rattling around in the trailer when going over speed humps etc, plus the weight, that would make me very reluctant to use crockery. Also the fact that it's probably all going to be carted over a rough field in a bowl to the wash-up point, and it only takes one trip to have the whole lot on the ground. I don't often do that at home!
We use Arcoroc. It's light an inexpensive, the last lot only cost £7.00 for a full four place setting. I have to agree, melamine is nasty, it stains and food does not taste the same. I can probably understand using it for camping, but not in a caravan. Imo
When we first changed over from proper plates and mugs to the melamine stuff, we, nay, I, was too tight to pay for the good stuff. We picked up a load from the £ shop in Saundersfoot. While the plates were great, we could not stop the mugs from getting stained. Melamine cleaner sorted the problem, but was a pain.
I was persuaded, nay, instructed by Mrs Scarlets fan that we need a new set. Picked up a great deal at Mendip's end of season sale last year, but one set get another free. To this day she still thinks I splashed out!!1
As an option to Poundland - our branch of TJ Hughes have packs of 'Melamine' crockery at £1 / £2 for various numbers of each. We priced it up, and I think 4 of each- 2 sizeplates, bowls and mugs were uner a tenner. Quite a reasonable pattern too.
