We have the standard Tom Tom GO.  We have had it 13 months now and find we would not want to be without it.  Our friend bought one on our recommendation and he bought the maps to America and France as he is away quite a bit in these countries.  He said they were fantastic.  I dont think that they were that expensive.

I have the Evesham Nav-cam 7000. It was recently on offer for £150+vat at Makro. It has a speed camera database that gives audible warnings at 600 and 100 metres. The database includes known mobile sites as well as fixed cameras. Updates can be downloaded from the Nav-cam website and are free for the first six months. The Navigation has one eccentric foible in that it directs the driver into every layby! Other than that it does a good job of getting from A to B. It comes with a cradle to mount onto the screen via a suction cup.

Good value when you consider that GPS camera locators were selling for £400 a few short months ago.

I bought a separate set of Western Europe cds for my PDA-based Tomtom, and they are also suitable for all TT Go devices. They cost about £100, from Expansys.co.uk, but they were bloomin' difficult to get hold of, having placed orders with 2 other retailers only to find they were out of stock. Something funny seemed to be going on, and after receiving them i see you can now buy a download version direct from Tomtom for about the same price.

Speed camera POIs are available for free download from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/, and a quick google will turn up many other useful POIs.

With traffic updates, i believe you need to have a GPRS-compatible mobile phone through which the TTGo will communicate. I also think there's a subscription charge for this service, which is part of the 'Tomtom Plus' enhancements.

Hope this helps.

Paul.

Great answer Paulydee

Just what I actually needed to know. Many thanx for the Expansys website. TomTom software is vastly over-priced and is a total rip off but then, what software from the big companies isn't it?

also try www.dnote.nl for POIs.

Its a bit much that the database for Pocketgps was created by us, the users. PocketGPS always said that they would never charge for that download - seems taht they are as trustworthy as any other company...
