both butane and propane are lpg
but i tend to use propane all year round
butane as said is a summer gas as in the winter it does not expand as freely as propane and it also tends to burn at a lower temp,propane tends to burn more fearce in the summer than in the winter due to it over expanding in the summer heat but i find it ok all year round,camping gas is butane.
hope this helps

cheers chris

Hmm just to correct myself as i was joking on the blue winter, red summer !

Blue = butane
red = propane

The main difference between these two LP gases is the rate at which they can produce gas vapour at lower temperatures . Propane vapourises more readily than the Butane. therefore if you plan to use gas outside when the abeiant temperature is lower than 1 or 2 Deg C then propane is recommended, other wise butane is just fine.
