umm, one question.

having spent first weekend ever without ehu my problem is this, the one i have was for my caravan which we have just sold. I cant afford proper tent one just yet so went without. We used a large bucket filled with cold water "97 pence in tesco", which done the job admirably. However unless full our milk cartons etc floated at top of bucket. Any tips to keep things under water, and what can i put butter etc in that wont leak. Beer was no problem, always being full, stayed at bottom!!!

                                             Camping made easy

Hello there, we have been camping 20+ years and done it the cheap way and the no so cheap way. To cook we use a Coleman duel fuel twin petrol stove with a single duel fuel stove for the kettle, (you can buy petrol anywhere) for lighting I use LED torches and LED cluster lights from caravans or boats, I think Halfords even sell them too now for cars, look at LED replacement bulbs

Like these8080 They only use 60ma (you can run about 10 of these and still only use about 1Amp) you only need two in a large tent. I use 4 or 5 on switches. I buy these and make them up with leads on then just plug them in to a box I made that has 6 cigarette lighter sockets in it and this runs from a 110Ah Leisure battery. The box I made was a simple thing made from the spare cigarette lighter sockets you can buy from Halfords, the ones you plug into your car cigarette lighter socket and it splits into 3 or 4 sockets. I put these in a box and run some heavy wire from the box to two QUICK RELEASE BATTERY TERMINALS like these>>

65 then connect to the battery

Basically the 110Ah battery runs the power box, I plug the radio, DVD player Lcd TV the lighting, anything 12v etc all into one fused box. Nice and neat sorted! Buy the box from Maplins etc

I only take a heater at the end of the camping season to keep the chill away.(for the wife n kids) I have bought many cool boxes over the years and used ice packs too. When we camped for more than a few days in summer the cool box was not very good, even exchanging ice blocks etc. The 12v powered ones are great plugged in on the journey but when your static on site there not so good even with ice blocks. They will flatten a car battery in a about 5 or 6 hours if you plug them in, they draw about 4Ah.

The best way to keep stuff cool is a combicool fridge I have used one of these now for many years, I would highly recommend one to anyone serious about camping. They run on 230v mains. 12v Dc and Gas = 3way.

The water in a bucket idea works until the water reaches the same temperature as it is outside (25+C not good and hassle eh?) The combicool will also make ice its that good! How many beers & bottles of milk can you cram in a bucket? No cooked meats, bread, butter etc unless you put it in seald containers that take up loadsa room or want it soaking wet without them lol. (hassle again)

The way I go camping on sites or up mountains etc without a EHU can be done for weeks on end with no bother and there are 4 of us 2 adults 2 children.. Everyone will have there own method but this one is tried and tested over many years and it works week after week.

Happy camping and if you find a method and it works well pass it on…

If you are using a bucket of cold water. Buy milk in plastic bottles put a teatowel over them the evaporation keeps the milk cool. It doesn't matter if they float the teatowel stays wet.Tupperware containers for marg are leak proof.
