I have just got hold of some 'trailer' u bolts from Towsure (50mm wide legs) that appear to do the trick for £1.60 a throw. They are substantial compared to the narrower bolts normally supplied with roof boxes but should be fine.
Just need to get them in a vice and compress them now as I can't get the bar off as the legs are a bit splayed!!
