As Val points out, a lot of people use the strap on racks and are happy with them. But, ....

When we changed from a car with a tow ball to one without, I bought a strap on bike rack. Used it once or twice, had no confidence in it and sold it. Had a tow bar fitted to our car for the sole purpose of being able to use our Maxxraxx tow ball mounted bike rack!

This was poo-pooed by a friend as ridiculous, until he saw someone's strap on rack and all the bikes on it come off in the middle of a motorway.

The bike shop we used to use, before we moved to where we are now, refused to sell strap on racks as they felt they were too vulnerable to human error. MT

I use a high level strap on rack and always stop after a couple of miles to check if anything has "settled" or loosened, on the camper as well as the bike rack. After a few bumps there is a usually little bit of tightening to be done.

My friend has a roof mounted one on her 4 wheel drive. It's an absolute nightmare getting the bikes on and off. When she visited recently we had to get a chair to stand on and she's 5' 8".

We use a roof mounted rack when carrying 2 or 3 bikes and never had a problem.  For long journeys with the TT we mount them on the trailer carrier, which doubles up as a makeshift cycle rack when we have pitched.

For a single bike on short journeys we use the rear mounted rack.

Haven't got a towball mounted one so I can't comment other than it looks pretty solid when fitted.
