Perhaps that depends on which ones you use?  The Argos ones we bought were useless - they were only any good for one trip and then they didn't work any more.  We tried the Betterware ones and found they worked fine (though they would have been better with a valve) as they were made of a different material and were stronger and more flexible ......... and at least they didn't re-inflate part way home. (Quite disconcerting when you hear a weird sound and see the contents of your boot [an estate car] rise in your rear view mirror!!

Whichever ones you use, you have to be careful with them. I have to remind the kids that although they are like bricks when deflated they are highly susceptible to mis-treatment - so don't throw them around - please, kids!

We wouldn't go camping without them now ..... they really do save space if you have duvets/sleeping bags/pillows etc.  I'm still amazed by them, as a huge pile of bedding etc is dumped in our lounge for packing ......... and with half a dozen of these bags it's reduced to a much more manageable pile.

There is a technique to it though .......... as the air is being sucked out it's important to pat the bags with your hands to ensure they form a sort of brick shape - then they pack more easily.  Otherwise you get lumps and bumps and can end up wasting space.

Personally, I wish somebody would invent a darned great big one, which would fit in my luggage space.  Then perhaps I could just throw everything in, hit a switch in the car and watch the whole lot shrivel up into a tiny cube!  Instead of which I now have to find how to pack in more 'rubbish' as the wife and kids now expect their 'shrunk' bedding to make space for their other garbage!!

Hmmmm ....... perhaps 'Honey, I shrunk the kids' might turn out to be prophetic?!!!

HI

If you put the clothes in flat as though you were putting them in a drawer they should not come out of the bags creased, well ours did not this summer.

cheers

How abouts these ones? They come with a 5 year guarantee. Think they are like the ones mentiond in the original posting.

http://www.packmate.co.uk/packmate_stack_vac.htm

There are different types for different usages, but the Stack & Vac ones fit in more than the VacuSac ones (they are top loading instead of side loading and will fit into a container) I have just emailed them asking what their 5 year gurantee covers (not sure whether they would cover holes made in them though) will let you know...

Sell both types on ebay;

i think i'll test my airbed vacuum will do the trick for the return journey before i squash even more stuff into my van!  I'll have a go at using it on a good bin bag (waitrose clear plastic storage bags are my favourite anyway for travelling) which could be handy if i have been shopping while i am camping...

I bought some of these bags on ebay and used them for the first time at the weekend. Even though they were supposedly jumbo sized (described as easily taking a king sized duvet), it really gave my arm muscles a workout trying to get said duvet into the bag. Has anyone found bags that are easier to pack or should I stick to strong bin liners in future?

I bought two ex-army compression bags for our duvets and pillows - stuff 'em in and tighten the straps. Shrinks them down to about one foot in diameter by eighteen inches high. The sacks are heavy duty canvas, cost a fiver each and will last for years.

Hi,

I have just had an email reply from Pack Mate regarding whether the 5 year guarantee covers holes made in the plastic, and they said;

"Yes, the 5 year guarantee covers everything, just send the punctured bag back to us and we will replace it."

Blimey, I didn't think that they would cover that, I think I might invest!

sounds good!

i see they do No Vac bags too; which would solve the problem of the return journey.
