What's to be embarassed about walking up the field to empty your night pail?

There's only two sorts of people who camp: those who sh*t and those who lie!

oh well then if you care more about the enviroment than your pocket disregard this thread

but i would like to point out all your milk cartons, most bin liners that people use onsite and bacon packets are not bio degradeble either and toilet trips are just as much part of life as your breakfast

and if your that bothered the bags can be emptyied into toilet and end up in the same place as hospital sluce machines that dispose of exactly the same material from maternity units everyday just on a much larger scale

Don't quite get your points?

Yes lots of things aren't bio-degradable - that's not really a really to not make an effort where possible is it? I'm no tree hugger, I run motorsport meetings - hardly the preserve of the tree hugger but it doesn't stop me making an effort where I can.

As for hurting your pocket - I'm pretty sure that bio-degradable bin bags aren't pricey - I'm sure it would still work out cheaper than wag bags if you want to DIY.

And yes, if you use a toilet it all goes to the same place and is treated through the sewerage system - I don't get the link to the bio-degradable/non bio-degradable debate though?

nor does my life stop me making an effort the toilet waste point was if you emptyied your non bio degradable bag down the loo it would be treated the same as all other waste leaving you with just a tiny winy plastic bag to go in the rubbish much smaller than the bacon and milk cartons that the poster pointing out the bags wouldnt be biodegradable probrably uses themselves oh sorry it was you wasnt it

nor do they probrably post on other threads saying dont eat bacon or drink milk because the packaging isnt biodegradable but they do post on this thread to say but your idea isnt biodegradable and wag bags are to that effect and it wouldnt have wee in it for 40 years if you tipped it down the loo would it

using the toilet is a neccesary part of life all the plastic packaging on make-up ect isnt nor is the huge ammount of energy used to make a new car, but it doesnt stop you buying and using it does it so if i want to use a non degradable sandwich bag to wee in why should i be made to feel guilty??

i dont buy pre over packaged meat from a supermarket i walk everywhere i can,, i use rainwater to flush the loo, i have a compost bin so i dont buy fertilizer for the garden, i grow some of my own veg,and i regularly join a rambling group to go out and pick other peoples litter up on our local nature trails i do my bit and dont see the odd sandwich bag being a problem sorry

I still can't find what I am looking for.
After years of BWL using plastic bags and cat litter I have now acquired a 'proper' chemical loo (Thetford thingie)
I have trouble with pulling out the cassette to empty / find it heavy to carry / wild camping with not many emptying points would cause it to becomr too full and smelly.
So I want to revert back to BWL days, but use the cassette toilet as the 'bucket' with bags and litter.
I cannot source the correct size bags anywhere.
Ordinary carriers that fitted over the bucket are far too small to fit over the cassette seat. Black sacks are far too big.
Has anyone succeeded with this method.

If I was going to just empty my waste down the toilet I'd just use the bucket as I do on many sites. On some sites the WAG bags work well and as Jayne says I value the fact that they are bio-degradeable.

You seem to be getting very worked up and personal over over this, I still don't see what's wrong with the bio-degradeable suggestion and why you feel so strongly about the suggestion.

Horses for courses I guess.

Have I got it wrong with wag bags then? The main thing I didn't like about them is that they have to be disposed of in the bin, surely you don't empty then down the loo??   Might as well pee in your bucket and empty that.

As for the wild camping thing then surely if truely wild camping then a small spade would be more appropriate?

H

P.S If wag bags are your thing then I'm not knocking that "horses for courses", just confused about how you dispose of them and there contents

i wouldnt drive around day to day with a bucket in the boot but may drive around with a few zippy bags of gel in the glove box incase the kids got caught out.i suppose if you have a very large boot its not a problem having a bucket in there everyday but mine is full with the pram and kids coats ect

wag bags are meant to be thrown in the bin ...i commented about tipping them down the loo in reply to the comment about the fact the diy bags wouldnt be degradable..hope this clears your confusion

im not worked up at your degradable comment i just dont see why you are asking people to use biodegradable bags for this on this thread when you wouldnt think of going on a thread where people are disgussing food and say please dont have milk and bacon unless your drinking from the cow and your bacon isnt in a packet

anyway dont worry wish i hadnt started the thread now realy just keep paying ten times what the bags are worth i dont use them was just pointing out that peeps could save money if they wanted to ill keep using my thetford everyones happy

brendajorsler have you tried 20litre peddal bin liners? biodegradable of course

Heifer, the idea about the PETT system that WAG bags form part of is that they are entirely bio-degradable and so are able to go into landfill sites as they break down.

The bag that you pee in (sorry if it's too much detail!) goes into a second bag and that just goes into the nearest bin. The system is approved by a bunch of US bodies and the "leave no trace" program. It's worth having a google if you're interested in them - the US sites have more info.

Personally I use the bucket on its own on some sites and with WAG bags on others depending on several factors.

I wouldn't use a WAG bag and then empty it in the 'loo - I'd just use the bucket - I'm not proud I'll carry it through the site!

Don’t you just love a good toilet thread?

Anyway putting the touchy subject of bio or non-bio to one side. The original question was about making up your own wag bags, so with a bit of spare time on my hands and all the ingredients to hand I decided to experiment.

Nappy innards verse Hanging basket water gel.

The cloth type strip of the nappy absorbed 1.75 litres of water & had a consistency of runny wallpaper paste.

25grams of hanging basket gel absorbed 1.75 litres of water & had the consistency of thick wallpaper paste.

Result - the Hanging basket gel performed better and 25 grams cost 33p, more pee for your p.

I don’t know how much the nappy cost because my granddaughter is now one missing.

As you can imagine with results like this the excitement was running at fever pitch, so I tried 1 teaspoon full of hanging basket gel and added 0.25 litre of water.

This proved to a good ratio of gel to water and will be henceforward be known as the “The piddle mark” on which all future experiments will be judged.

The contents of one bag were emptied down the toilet, which promptly solidified. Ooops. Now where is  that Dyna-rod number?

Disclaimer

Only pure water was used.

No animals or children were hurt or maimed during this experiment.

The decision on whether to pee into a plastic bag (bio or non bio) is entirely yours & the author cannot be held responsible for any accidents during the night.

The experiment has just been postponed as my wife has returned home, questioned my sanity & moaned about the mess.

Excellent post, pie*face. I hope you are on good terms with your neighbours and they will let you use their bathroom until you get the drains sorted?

I am a bit worried about comments relating to tipping the gel stuff down the loo, too, and can just imagine being at a site where all the sanitary units are blocked up because of D-I-Y Wagbaggers (biodegradable or otherwise) who flush rather than tip!

Mind you , I wouldn't particularly want to be camped next to a bin crammed with piddle bags, either, especially if it gets a bit warm......
