Might be a silly question, but here goes.

Is there anything stopping me using freezer blocks with my new Aldi coolbox. That way i could have it plugged in as i drive around (dont use ehu) and pop in the freezer block at night?

Regards

Andrew

FYI there were 4 left in the Worcester store this morning - and loads of other stuff.  Well worth a look.  Had to restrict myself on purchases else would have got alot more kit.

Have seen these in the store and read all the posts on this thread.

But still now sure as to - How long do you leave it in the car on charge for? How long would it keep stuff cool once out of the car?

How do you use yours????

Could do an experiment now - get it cool then put in a frozen bottle of water and see how long it keeps if for switched off - would that help?

Christine

Update: Have put it in our conservatory which is quite warm today with a can of coke in it to see if it gets cold enough (haven't got a thermometer). I've also stuck some coolblocks in the freezer - my plan (I am so sad) is to get our new 3-day ice coolbox cool and then stick a frozen bottle of water into each and see which one 'wins'. I would presume the fan operated one but not sure. I am then gonna try again with the fan off because it sounds a bit loud to me so might need to be switched off overnight.

Hi,

We got one from Aldi or Lidl, can't remember now, about 2 years ago.  Then last year we got a converter/rectifier so that we could plug it into the EHU.  (Ours didn't have a plug, just the cigarette lighter attachment).  Went camping last Bank Holiday and had to switch it off overnight on the Saturday because ice was forming and the frozen food wasn't defrosting!

I have used them with ice packs, and will again this summer as a supplement to the fan.  Really good piece of kit.

At 12v it draws 38 watts Timmy - so if you left it on all night the car probably wouldn't start next morning.

Are you sure thats right? if it draws 3 amps and car batteries are rated at over a hundred of Ampere Hours.  Probably, a long weekend would be pushing it assuming you don't use the car long enough to charge the battery.

3.16 amps at 12v. A battery is "flat" when the charge in it drops to 50%. If you switch the car engine off when you arrive on site at 5pm Friday night, assuming its a 100aph battery, it will be flat by 9am Saturday morning.

I've had to lend my jump start cables out a few times to hapless campers on the next pitch.

I'm with Caz, I wouldn't leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter when the engine wasn't running.

Results of experiment:

Switched coolbox on at 2pm ish yesterday - put in 1 room temperature can of coke and left it running in a hot conservatory - by 5pm coke was cold enough to drink but not as cold as the one I put in the fridge.

At 10pm I put loads of ice blocks into our Coleman "keeps ice for 3 days" box to cool it down ready for todays experiment, and put a frozen bottle of water into the Aldi box - left it running all night - by 10am 100ml of a 500ml bottle had defrosted.

At 10am I put another frozen bottle into the Aldi cooler along with one ice block and switched it off and a frozen bottle into the Coleman alongside the mostly still frozen blocks. Left in conservatory which wasn't overly hot today as has been overcast all day. Would say it was at a 'pleasant' indoor temperature.

Have just opened the boxes... 450ml of the Coleman water bottle are defrosted, just a tiny bit of ice left (so much for 3 days!) 240ml of the Aldi bottle are defrosted. So even without the electricity running the Aldi box has kept the ice better than the Coleman.

HOWEVER - DH just picked the Aldi box up by the handle and the bloody thing fell apart!!! The insides 'slide out'. If we can't carry it, it isn't much use.

Anyone else had the same problem? I will be going back to Aldi tomorrow in the vain hope they still have one to exchange it for... otherwise I suppose we will need to try superglue!

I'm still struggling to keep up with all of your experiments!  Trying to read that and concentrate on a Friday evening after spending 2 hours in traffic jams isn't easy!
