Staying in the North West Highlands of Scotland in July this year it was the Cleg Fly that i hated.
We saw no midges at all but i was bitten twice by Clegs and they don't half leave some blood behind on the skin when you knock them off.

Should have added that we only saw the Clegs inland and not on the campsite by the sea.

Two years ago, we were staying at The Plassey in Wrexham in our trailer tent. We woke up one bright and sunny morning, opened the zip on our bedroom to go into our living area and it looked as though it was still night time it was so dark! The darkness was due to hundreds of Crane flies (Daddy long legs) all over the inside of our tent! There was that many of the blighters they where blocking the natural sunlight out. Didn't bother me toooo much as they are harmless, but try telling that to a hysterical Miss Psyklon!
I ended up picking them off one by one by their wings or legs and releasing them back into their natural environment as I didn't want to plaster them to the inside of the canvas!
We read later that day in the papers that Britain would be infested by crane flies that had laid there eggs in damp soil and conditions that weekend were perfect for them to hatch, so our trailer tent had become an ideal incubator for them and they had come up through our Eco-friendly groundsheet! Needless to say, Miss Psyklon insisted we get a caravan ASAP like her sister had who was on the next pitch to us and never saw a one!!!
Sorry for being a bit long-winded, but just finished work at midnight. (Another bad day at black rock)
Oh, and by the way, the above post is in no way detrimental to The Plassey Leisure Park which we really enjoy visiting or Black Rock Sands. (Just those pesky crane flies)

Goodnight!!!

I don't like earwigs.  Any other insect, arachnid or mite is just fascinating (I should have been an entymologist (sp?)!!).  But I will admit I can see no reason for wasps!

Best beasties this year have been the 4 may bugs (cockerchaffers) that came up under Little Scamp's groundsheet, and the dor beetle we found in Wales (it was the most amazing colour - black at first glance, but actually an intensely dark, irridescent purple - stunning creature).

Mamma bear, dont know how i managed it because i have hated them all my life. I can never kill insects(Except wasps) and always have to get one of the kids to remove them but one morning  there was one on the kitchen window and i felt so sorry for it being trapped indoors so i just cupped my hands over it and helped it out!! I was well chuffed lol. Have done it a couple of times since no probs. I will never be able to do it with moths or spiders though! Not ever!!!! I dont like butterflies either, to me they are just glorified moths

I don't know what it was but some thing bit me about 4 weeks ago on my toe and my arm.

The bite on the toe is starting to itch a bit less now, having woken me in the night most nights and stopped me getting back to sleep, but the one on my arm which hasn't itched before started to itch yesterday. It's driving me mad.

Whatever it was I hope I never meet another one.

Apart from that, anything that bites me, flies of any kind and wasps - I turn into a homicidal maniac. Oh, nearly gorgot the flying ants that invade my kitchen at least once every summer.

I encountered some flies in Great Langdale in August that I'd not seen before. About an inch long, heavy, dark red bodies, black legs and a sense of direction than makes a cranefly look like a fighter jet. I thought they'd come from a recently mown hay field but saw some more halfway up Blencathra.

What are they? Anybody know?

I loathe slugs! I even get them coming into my house, but if I see them I leave them until they dry out and turn into bullets before I dispose of them... no mess that way...

My worst insect was a earwig that dropped off a branch onto my nose, As it hit my nose I took a sharp breath so that i could 'blow' it out of my nostril......yep you guessed it it got sucked up my nose and i couldn't blow it back out...but i could feel it wiggling......Made me puke.....

Maybe a horse-fly BUT watch out they bite--OUCH!
