Lisa, whereabouts were you in Kent? We just came home this morning to Brighton (well, Woodingdean actually) after 4 days at Doddington (10 minutes or so from Leeds Castle). There were loads of wasps. I usually ignore them, and we respect them for their contribution to crop and flower pollination, but they got so bad around the tent, and the kids kept flapping, so we made a bottle trap. Caught 35 in it one afternoon, then this morning caught 25 in the space of an hour!

Also as an addition to this little tip,we just bought a book on all the uses of vinegar and it mentions a general insect trap.If your plants are being eaten by bugs, fill a 2ltr bottle with a cup of cider vinegar and a cup of sugar.Next slice up a banana peel up into small pieces and add to the bottle with a cup of cold water.Shake it all up then sit or tie it near to the damaged plants to trap and drown any pests. If your party/BBQ is suffering from midges, flies etc place a bowl full of cider vinegar near some food but away from your guests[probably coz of the smell of the vinegar]and by the end of the evening most of your uninvited guests will be floating in the bowl. The book does not mention wasps but most things that fly around a BBQ are a pain anyway so it might work for them as well, like a general trap.By the way the book is called vin.e.gar isbn number 978-1-84397-806-0 and retails at £9.99 but we got it from The Works for much less
I got stung for first time in years this year. It was a wasp as it was still buzzing about and I had to kill it but it did not hurt as badly as I remembered. Are they getting weaker or is it a new breed!
I'm a bit confused about how this design works, sorry to be a bit dozy. If you cut 6" off the bottle from a 1 litre bottle, turn the top up the other way and put it back inside the bit you've just cut from, putting some liquid in, how does the wasp get trapped or drown? Surely they can just come out again? I can't picture this at all....
And has the waspinator not worked for anyone at all? After a particularly nasty experience with one up my skirt in July where 5 weeks on I still have a mark (but OMG it could have been SOOO much worse) my irrational fear of the beasts has increased to huge proportions!!
the top you cut off goes back in upside-down,making a funnel.they can all crawl/fall in coz its a wide opening, but they cant find the little hole to get out again
my friend has a wasp trap bought in Past Times (so obviously has stood the test of time !!) works on the funnel theory like the inverted tops of soft drink bottles and my friend had caught 30 or more in a very short time ! what I can't understand is - these wasps home in from a very large radius with obvious precision but can't navigate back through a 1 cm hole I feel sure they will evolve but lets kill as many of the b.......s as we can before they do lol
we made the first one out of a volvic water bottle but it was soon filling up so the 2nd one was a big lemonade bottle which at the last count had 36 of them in it!
