It might be worth investing in a few undergarments that wick away moisture and keep the tent as well ventilated as possible. When I used to go sailing in December we used to leave windows open, even if it was -5 outside, as nothing makes you colder quicker than your own condensation.

You could also try putting one of those cheap heat reflective blankets under the airbed.

Incidentally, most airbeds just increase sweating as they do not breath, I'm looking into alternatives myself at the moment!

Not sure I would recommend fleece pyjamas as (unless they state otherwise) they repel moisture, so it just sits next to your skin and makes you feel clammy..and eventually cold, even with the fleece. My understanding is breathable layers..with fleece being the last layer?!?...so sweat gets wicked away all night.

Also, if you have hook up...why not an electric duvet or blanket? Check the safety aspect with an airbed though.

Lockie, what would you describe as a decent sleeping bag? How much do you think you have to pay to get one?Ours were about £40 each.

You can pay the earth for specialist technical kit, but for leisure camping there's  no real need for a bag that will keep you warm on the top of Everest. £40-ish would get you a wide choice of really excellent leisure bags, up to 4-seasons and with all the features like 2-way zips, baffles etc.

That's still a lot of money of course if there's four or five of you in a family. However as I keep saying, your bag is your most important piece of kit after the tent. I'm constantly amazed at people being quite happy to shell out for less necessary pieces of kit like wardrobes and shelf units but who balk at more than £15 for a sleeping bag.

We own several sleeping bags...ten or twelve at the lat count....and with the exception of my OH's down mountain bag I don't think any of them cost more than £32 (this last figure was for the Coleman Hampton 220 bags I bought a couple of weeks ago.) There are usually deals on last year's colours or discontinued bags if you hunt around and the best time to upgrade your bags is January/Febuary, before the new kit appears in the shops.

I have to agree about why do people scrimp on this bit of kit.
The reason i mention the carp bags is they are all big and all warm.So many threads on here about being cold or needing bigger bags when the solution is in the carp world as standard.

Sure it can get pricey for a decent bag but you only pay it once and it will last longer than most peoples poly tents do.

Our bedding last week consisted of:

car blanket
fleece blanket each
thick duvet
us in normal pyjamas (though one night I wore a fleecy jumper, but took off when too warm later)
thin duvet
blanket
airbed
camping mats
thick blanket
tent floor

Warm as toast every night. I don't know if it got very cold but we were on the north west coast of Scotland, the only night I woke up was because my elbow was cold till I tucked it back in. I refuse to skimp on the bedding!

At the weekend (near Edinburgh) I used a self inflating mat, my Vango Nitestar 300XL Square and a thin pair of t-shirt weight PJs. I was warm as toast too. The Nitestar cost me £25 in the sales last year.

I have given up with Airbeds.....I was really cold on our last trip...partly because i did not oversee DH taking our camping stuff down from the loft and he decided we did not need all the picnic blankets and the foil backed insulating mats.

On the last night it was so cold the motor on our cool box froze and i was in my sleeping bag shivering with a temperature which turned out to be the beginning of tonsillitus....great...There was a storm blowing outside and we had no adult doses of paracetamol so had to work out how much of the kids to take in the middle of the night...

however maybe I would not have got so bad if half our insulating stuff had not been still in the loft...however I have now invested in 7cm thick SIM Black canyon mats which were half price on Amazon and a camp bed...this should be warm and comfortable!!!!

have not told DH about the SIM mats yet....but as they were half price thought it would be ok!!!!Still.... means we can leave some of our insulating baggage at home now!!!

take care CJ
