You're lucky to have the possibility of using fan heaters at all, most Danish campsites have forbidden them or at least take an extra EHU charge when you bring one!

If there are 3 hook up points on a bollard, these are to serve 3 pitches, not 2 for you 1 for the next and the other will have to do without ! Could you not run an extension lead from the caravan to the awning, perhaps through a window?

Well this does not apply to them then.

As I originally said, by using 2 EHU plugs! ie 2 on the bollard, if you just use 1 EHU plug on the bollard then split it into 2 that will not be a problem when it comes down to us providing hook ups for every one else that particular bollard serves.

When any system is designed a diversity factor is applied it was never envisaged that everybody would be using the maximum available at the same time.

The transformers supplying the normal domestic household supplies couldn't cope with the kind of situation that is found on campsites with the majority of people using the max at the same time.

Another problem suffered by campsites is that the cable size used for their distribution network isn't rated to cope with the demand encountered nowadays and to upgrade would be very expensive.

Agreed, although Id love to see inside a substation if a whole street decided to pull 60A(min) all at once.

Keep meaning to get my regs out to look at what the diversity calcs would be for a campsite, would have thought 5x16A outlets would be protected by more than 20A as surely it would be wired in 4mm minimum, so would allow 32A (distance depending) (still not 16 A each, but better)

Fascinating read...no one seems to have suggested that before you set up on a site (or even before you go) you just ask the site owners what amperage is provided and then make sure that you do not use appliances which will exceed that draw. Nothing to do with money, coins tokens etc to draw your power. We always check and know what appliances cannot be on at the same time. Each site has its rules, play by them. Think the OP must have been dealing with a couple who did not understand the offside rule!

Well, this is easy for me to say, as it's very early days in my life as a tentist, but.....

I dread the day we need to plug in, as that may (may!!) mean we have to be tented next to Mr & Mrs Emmerstreetenders, or young Jack & Jenny "Boom Boom" 24hr partydude.

Like I say, early days yet, but for now at least, it is our intention to go as long as possible without EHU, look out for leccy-free/pitch-where-you-like sites/fields, and hope the car will keep 'phones, E-Cigs and possibly i-pad charged up.
Admittedly, I can at least fiddle my expenses enough to run to what amounts to a free supply of lamp batteries (to run alongside a couple of wind-up & solar ones). And I am fortunate enough to have been able to afford a top of the range 5h*t-hot sleeping bag apiece, and have just about enough car space for a skip-full of thermals, wooly hats and heat-holder socks..... and vodka of course, which helps!!

No, this may come to bite me in the backside, but for now, you can keep yer EHU pitches, and yer 'eaters, and yer boring upright water-gauge kettles that can't even whistle !

When yer fuse blows, just take a look over at us, and we'll raise our glasses to yer, and give you a wave....... that's us, behind the balaclava's..... flickering by candle-light!!

Mucker (Brrr!)

Totally agree and also have the luxury of getting bookings a lot easier as more pitches dont have ehu.Good sleeping bags take care of any cold issues at night.

If your using a splitter then your only using 1 EHU on the bollard. I think you would still be limited to your power usage though, eg 10amp hookup, using a splitter, you could only draw 5amp on each, or 2 amp on one, 8amp on the other before tripping the fuse!
From the sounds of it, the person above is using 2 EHU on the bollard, so they can have a higher amperage?!

Maybe campsites will have locks on the EHU in future and then you'll only have access to what you pay for! Maybe they'll invent some sort of computer controller metering so they can record how much each EHU is drawing and bill back to users accordingly?!

We regularly go to a site in France, where there is the choice of 6amp or 10amp (at extra daily charge) on each pitch. We always used to panic, and go for the 10amp, but then found the 6amp is actually more than enough for our needs, either in a caravan or a tent. We take a few electrical items/small low wattage appliances with us, but rarely use more than one at a time so as not to overload the system. That's why I seriously wonder if anyone actually does exploit the EHU provision; how can you when it is already limited?

It's possible to exploit it because the tripping current for an MCB is different to it's current rating.

An MCB is required to carry 1.13 times it's current rating almost indefinately and up 1.45 times it's rating for  a maximum of 1 hour.

A 10A should not trip when carrying 11.3A for at least an hour and 14.5A upto a maximum of 1 hour,at 2.55 times it's rated current 25.5A it must trip within 60 seconds.
