I'll do so again with the Karsten in the form of the Combi/Vario Awning, and shall only rig a tarp if I am entertaining a larger than normal group.

A full height set up now - hopefully the final set up! I used my front pole from my tunnel tent to get height and angles correct.



How it fits over the front hoop. It looks really tight but isn't. It isn't distorting the hoop at all.


Left side with hose going on it at full blast - no issues


Right side drains mainly here on the left side of the tent hoop. A little drains on the guy line closest to the right of the tent hoop too.


I'm pleased with this set up. :)

The ridgeline will be almost north-south oriented and most of the photos I have taken would be looking to the north. There will be a row/hedge of trees on the east side (behind the tent). So far the forecast is that the wind will be mainly from the east (right hand side on photo) so we should be quite sheltered by the trees.

Thanks for the suggestions of poles/guy lines instead of running a ridgeline over the top of the tent. This set up has a pole on the back right of photo and a guy line to create a slight gutter. Then just guy lines on front right of photo to create a deep gutter. It drains really well so hopefully it will work once set up with an actual tent!

A hose test is good, I used a bucket of water instead while I am on a site.

Excellent efforts, and your dog looks pleased for certain.

As mentioned before, be prepared to take it down before bed or going out if anything more than light wind and/or drizzle is forecast to avoid damage.

I've just bought some line loks too. I've been wanting some but nowhere local stocks them and online places took too long to deliver. However, I've just discovered that DD tarps online shop delivers in 1-3 days so hopefully they will be here in time. I'm fed up of wrestling with sliders that don't slide!

Our holiday was great!

Here is what the tarp looked like when we first set it up:


Then as it was sunny, we put the centre pole up:


The idea was to use it as a rain shelter. However it was sunny all week with no rain at all! So it got a lot of use as a sun shelter, especially for the dog. :)

We used the Cross camping method for putting our tent up and it is so much easier and quicker than the manufacturer's instructions!

It might have LOOKED cool but it's got no windows, there's no separate bedroom pods to hide the mess and because it's single skin you can see the outline of everyone inside (which in some cases might be entertaining or even pornographic) so you are still better off!

Ooh tarps. Fun.

I've got the Quechua one which is only 20 or 30 quid with two king poles. It is polyester so it packs up really small and is light but it can be a bit hot underneath it in the sun. It can be a bit flappy in the wind but I guess all tarps are. It has lots of guying points.

I've succeeded in making lots of shapes to go along with my standing height tent and smaller tent. I usually faff with it for a whole day :). I tend to take a couple of extra king poles and use one. I make a sorry of pitched roof shade and raise one corner to give a standing height entry bit at the door and pen the other end down close to give a of wind break for cooking.

It's fine and waterproof as long as you build in some slopes.

I used my Quechua tarp last weekend with my Coleman Instant Tourer. It worked well with a windbreak to keep me warm when I lit a small fire ( firelog in a BBQ) .

Neighbouring male camper was amazed that a female would know how to do such a thing !

Confession time, I recently accidentally reversed my car in to one of the guy ropes holding my tarp up. Only realised when I heard a boing and the whole thing collapsed. Only damage done was to my pride. Part of the learning curve!

I've been following your experiments with interest Randommoose, as I'm still very much a tarp ingenue.

What I hadn't thought of, and learned from your last pics (I want to use a tarp as a canopy at the front of our B&B ten), is to put the ridge line/uprights horizontal to the front of the tent, and then drape/anchor the fabric crosswise. I'd only ever thought of having it go off forward (if you follow) which meant the verticals would get in the way of the door. Doh...

I'm squirelling away this nugget of wisdom until the spring as the camping season for us is sadly over. I think I need to make up an ending ritual as we put all the kit back into the loft.

P.S. Just seen DK's pic at the start of this post - boy have I been unobservant, as she is a fine proponent of the crossways ridge line...

Road test proper for my new ancient trailer tent this weekend. I will be packing the Quechua tarp and the Aldi windbreak in case the awning defeats me :D
