Having just read your post,I thought I'd take another look at our windshield.....and I don't know what the 'ell I was playing at before because it fits the stove easily!?! 
..as you say,it was probably down to the size of pans I had on the stove at the time..
(..knowing me,probably two big bl**dy great frying pans.. )
