I was just wondering the same about my 4 new foil backed blankets that arrived today! Maybe I should try to swap them for a few reindeer skins ;-)

I'm a bit confused now re which way to lay my foil-backed insulation. If it's with foil-side up as advised above, then how come they make foil-backed picnic rugs?

Is it foil-side up if you're laying it under a laminate floor does anyone know?

Thanks!

Sam

So glad to read these Forums. I was all set to go off with only me airbeds, the wife will be pleased. Did I see the mention of "cardboard" somewhere as well.

I think I mentioned cardboard. It's free...and handy from a local shop if you forget to bring your other option - or if you want to make a few extra layers. You can recycle or reuse afterwards.

I would imagine the foil backed picnic rugs are designed more to protect you from damp grass. Campers so happen to use them as carpets and under airbeds for insulation as we are a resourceful lot!!

We stick a foil backed picnic rug under our air beds, and a fleece cover on top of the airbed, a sheet and decent sleeping bags. We now have a trailer (yay!!) and will probably get some cheap roll mats now we have more space.

We use a scratch and newton hutch snuggle cover under the kids airbeds. I bought it for under 5.00 from pets at home and it opens out in a rectangle shape. It is some sort of lightly padded reflective foil used by nasa. If it's good enough for nasa it's good enough for my tent!!!

We use tent carpets in the main area and one bedroom of our Indie.

On the 2nd bedroom floor (ours of course - the kids get the 'posh' one with the carpet, and they sleep on camp beds) we duck-tape 2 or 3 foil-backed foam mats together then cover them with a huge woollen blanket that was a wedding gift in 1974 and tuck the edges under the mats. Super warm for the tootsies and good base for either the airbed or fat airics, depending on how we feel.

We'll pick up another tent carpet in due course but would still use the foil-backed foam mats underneath if not using camp beds.

Hi this may sound very strange but it works. We put pond plastic down first with pond lining on top then the airbed. They roll up really small very easy to pack, with the added bonous of warmth and the impossability of anything popping the airbed.
