OK Wildie - I totally agree with you and the aesthetics of the things - how long did it take you to erect those on your campsite?

I live in view of the North Hoyle Flats Wind turbines, and love looking out to sea at them. Along with my OH, we both regularly look out to see how many are turning during our journeys. After standing next to one at Mostyn Harbour before it was moved out, and looking at them now it's still hard to believe how big they actualy are.

I always fly the Saltire and the Lion Rampant, and have flown the UKcampsite Flag as well, mainly at meets but also on holiday all over the UK, I have found that it is a great conversation piece and in a lot of cases leads to more friendly people around enquiring where I am from up here etc. All folks from all countries have stopped and said hello which is rather good! I must also admit that at 25ft flags are too high! 15ft is more than apple and does allow those around you to see them as well as a guide for those who know us to see where we are pitched. I have also found that the birds don't land on the caravan or awning anymore which is indeed an added bonus!

Whilst I respect the views of the original poster I would also say that as in all things there is room for compromise on this one and perhaps that would be 15ft poles and fly the flag. Amazingly it may just start to promote a standard of unity in this nation that has not been seen since WW2.

I am a bit confused by Pennine Plodder's reference to the Queen's Standard as I cannot find a flag of that name. Do you mean the Royal Standard?

"The Royal Standard known to historians is properly 33 feet long (and thus a fairly tall staff would be required). Its use signals the rallying point for the Sovereign's supporters, and thus its design includes the national ensign (today the Union, but in earlier times in the British Isles the cross of St George or of St Andrew) plus a few of those Sovereign's badges that the supporters would be expected to recognise easily."

It seems that if it was the Royal Standard then it needed to be on a high pole & it is a rallying point for supporters of Her Majesty. So I cannot see why you should object.

Or was it this:

"The Royal Standard used today is properly the Royal Banner, featuring the arms of the Sovereign and signalling the Sovereign's physical presence, but it has come to be known as a square standard. As the original Royal Standard fell into disuse, the Royal Banner assumed the name of the original and acquired some of the original's symbolism. Thus today the Sovereign's Banner-Standard is used as a banner to display the arms of sovereignty of the three kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland (Wales, never a kingdom and ranking today as a principality, is not present), and as a standard it is flown only from the highest position, never lowered to half-mast, not even at the death of the Sovereign."

In which case I too would have expected Her Maj (or at least a corgi or two) to appear at some point.

Bordercaz, 'Twas No.2 and I did wait to see her tripping across the field (with or without corgies) - I'd have settled for Pheeleep in his jeep - but d'you know..... nobody appeared

Neither did Long John Silver or even the ship's cat, appear from the other tin tent.

Even I would have been disapointed by the first one Pennine, one would under those circumstances at the very least would expect to see a Royal boot kicking a Corgi or two out from time to time! I thought it was illegal to display this flag if you were not of Royal Lineage and the penalty is Death!
Similarly it is also a crime to display the Lion Rampart unless you are a Scottish King, however you may escape the death penalty if the flag is smaller than the actual Kings Flag and is used as a proclemation of your loyalty to the King!

As for the Pirates, it must have been a great relief that you did not cross their path, hopefully they were out ploundering elswhere and left you in peace!

Definitely treason, then, the only crime for which the death penalty still stands.

Perhaps it should have been reported to the powers that be.

At least I'm safe with my dragon & fish.

Yes what a sheltered life I must live if I cannot see what is so dreadful about flying flags LOL, I really must get out more. Amazes me how miserable some people are.
