If you put a little water with the meths it doesn't leave any residue and the fumes are so insignificant I barely notice them. I think the recommended water ratio to meths is 10% water. Trangias are a fantastic and simple piece of kit, I wouldn't consider any other stove.
Been reading this thread with great interest as I'm after a Trangia myself for when out walking. Nobody has yet mentioned anything about fumes? Does Meths give off any nasties when it burns?
Cheers,
Jon
there is a distinct odour from the meths when you open the bottle, but i dont recall noticing it while it is burning

Had a trangia since 1984.Brilliant piece of equipment and it`s so simple that nothing can go wrong.
You shouldn`t smell anything when lit,but might when extinguished.

Meths is industrial alcohol and exempt from duty (tax). It's poisonous if ingested, so to deter people from drinking it, additives are included to make it unpalatable to taste, sight and smell, and to induce vomiting.
So the neat stuff stinks. And so it should. But it actually smells lightly floral when it's burning. Not significant and not unpleasant. It's designed for use in stoves so the bittering and emetic additives are chosen to be safe to burn.
Obviously fuel is fuel so it needs some care, especially with spillage, refilling (never refill a hot burner) and the fact that the flame is hard to see in strong daylight.

I think you pretty quickly learn with a trangia to feel for heat (around a pan or well above the burner) rather than look for it.
I'd agree with all comments about it being an excellent piece of kit, especially if weight is not an option and you have the Trangia gas converter - the advantages of a trangia with the speed of propane/butane (there is a multifuel option too).
