Caz said what was important at the beginning and that is Butane is often useless in winter but will not actually freeze or become dangerous because of cold weather. Its also worth saying any bottled gas should be stored out doors and well away from dwellings.
Butane actually stops turning from a liquid to gas at -2c (freezing) but because the process of 'evaporation' produces more cold so further reducing the bottle temperature the actual useful outside temperature should be more than +2c. Propane stops gassing at -47c so is never a problem...almost!!
Propane is 31% less efficient than Butane so Propane under the old system was delivered to the caravan at a 33% higher pressure to compensate, the slightly higher difference then gives Propane the edge in a race. Always assuming that is.. either regulator is totally accurate and that is not often the case.
Because Butane and Propane have different energy values the two gasses as liquids weigh differently and this accounts for 6 and 7kg bottles again to even out the differences. Not exactly though but on quoted retail price they should be the same price for the energy stored, except you can quite often get good discounts on Propane.
