We had the same problem, and opted for a trailer. Like Rickit on the first page, it's permantely packed in the garage, we pack clothes and off we go. He even got bike racks to go on the top, so we're all sorted.
The other advantage being that if you do any stuff at home, load up the trailer and your ready to go to the dump (after unpacking the camping stuff of course!)
