We have recently started towing with a new Toyota Hilux, which is great. However we now need to invest in some new bike carriers as the ones that went on the roof bars on our Avensis Verso won't fit on the bars that are already fixed on the Hilux.
I guess we can get the Toyota carriers which are made to fit the bars but wondered if we should look at tow bar bike carriers instead?
Would appreciate any thoughts on carrying bikes on roof v. carrying bikes on tow bar mounted carrier.
I purchased roof bars from roofboxco ans once I worked out whether to fix to rack and then bars or bars and then hoist the bike it "easy" (and I have an MPV - then again Im over six foot tall!). At security barriers OH had to remind me I had them on the roof.

------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
I like the look of the one Piglet and Tigger have. Can you tell me though would there be enough clearance between the bikes and the front of the caravan? If there won't be enough clearance I think they will be going on the roof but the Hilux is very high to get them on. In fact I think the bikes on the roof will be higher than the caravan!
I think we would struggle to get the bikes in the van as we carry the awning, table and chairs in there. Also the van is brand new and on the one occasion our friends carried their bikes in the van they ended up with oil on the seats! I think it would be difficult to secure them properly so they wouldn't move about. Some vans have a sort of garage space you can put bikes in but not ours.
we put two bikes on a spare wheel carrier but have to take wheels of to clear the storage box on the front of our tt .not much trouble as the wheels are on quick release clips and i just slide them onto the bars of bike rack,by the way we have a shogun incase you din't guess!!!!

Sorry for the delay in responding.
There is plenty enough clearance for our trailer, there are pictures on MaxxRaxx website of Caravans I think.
I was very impressed with their service, I'd suggest giving them a call and having a chat with them to see what their experience is.
They really know their stuff and it struck me as a product that had been properly designed and engineered by someone who had a problem to overcome and found a good solution to it.
had the same problem of the sheer height of putting a bike on the top of a already high santa fe andi just reverted back to putting the bike upside down in a seat and handlebar grip, steady as a rock and cheap
