Hi all,
We've been camping a few times now and I can't get over the amount of stuff we seem to take! So I thought I'd ask all of you what equipment you all pack?
For example we have a 4 man dome tent - middle dome with two compartments opp each other to sleep 2 bodies in each side.
We have myself, hubby, 9yr old child, plus Labrador dog. We have so much stuff that last year we didn't have room to breath, so this year we are thinking of taking our frame tent as well and connecting the two together, having the frame tent for eating/cooking/storage in and the dome for sleeping in.
Does anything think this is extreme?
We have the usual air beds, sleeping bags, 2 ring cooker/grill, cooker stand, pots, pans, cups, utensils, little gas light, table, chairs, clothes, food, dog stuff, porta potty. But even typing it out here I know I'm missing so much cause if that's all we had in the tent - well I wouldn't be writing this!
What are we doing wrong? Should we take an extra tent for all eating/cooking in?
You may be wondering why we ate inside our little dome - well last year it rained for 2 out of our 4 days and every morning it was blinkin' cold, so there was no chance we were having breakfast outside!
I'll pop back tomorrow to see if anyone's replied!
Thanks in advance
Lisa

I think you`ll find most campsites won`t allow this, even if the pitch is big enough. Pup tents, utility tents and day rooms may or not be allowed and/or charged for, but not two main tents. You`d probably have to pay for two pitches.
To be honest your dome sounds pretty small for 3 people and a dog. The usual rule of thumb is number of people + 2 for weekends, so that`s a 6-man tent if you count the dog. For longer stays, double the number of people, ie 6-8 berth tent.
I use a 6-man tent plus a utility tent for weekends, and a 12-man tent plus utility tent for long stays. Lots of space for both living and storage, and I doubt that either combination takes up any more room than a frame tent. Plus most campsites seem happy to let me put a small utility tent on the pitch, and I very seldom get charged for it.

The other thing of course is to reduce the amount of stuff you take! No, I`m not suggesting we all share a family toothbrush, but if you follow Val`s simple 6 (7.8...???) Step Plan, you`ll reduce what you take.
1) Make a list. No, not a vague list like "pots", "tea towels" , but "Small, med and large pots with lids" and "6 teatowels plus kitchen towel". Write it in sections too, such as kitchen equipment, tent equipment, sports and relaxation gear etc etc. One list each person for clothes. Do this on A4 paper.
2)Go through it and think about each thing. The aim is to reduce the list by 10%, BY VOLUME, so don`t agonise over an extra teaspoon, but do over that sixth towel. (Take a couple of laundry gel tablets instead!)Do you really need a cooker + barbecue + Party Grill + toaster + kettle + mini oven? Get rid of one of them, if not two.
3) Was that easy peasy? Then do it again! Take out the next 10%. Everyone can do 10% on the first pass, no problem. The next 10% is harder.
4)Okay, you can keep the rest. For now! Next trip, pack from the list, no cheating. (Or if you cheat, write down the extras.) Pack the list as well.
5)On the trip, write down in a seperate sheet everything you forgot, or thought would have been useful
6) On the drive home, take the list out and put a star next to everything you didn`t use. Have a family competition as to the "Most Useless Object" you took. (In our case one year it was a travel cot that my daughter never set foot in for the first two weeks of our five week holiday....we left it in the recycle section of a French campsite. Never missed it!)
7)When at home again, rewrite the list. Include everything from (5), and have a close look at (6). I don`t recommend striking off everything from (6), btw. There may be good reason why you didn`t use it ie the sun shone so you didn`t need the waterproofs and wellies. But you`d better keep taking them.
8)Every trip, use the list and repeat 5, 6 and 7. Eventually you`ll have a list of things you need, want and actually use, rather tan taking half the boot full of "just in case" items.
* It`s also very useful to have two sets of lists, one for weekends and one for the main holiday, or, as in my case, one for the weekends in the tent and one for the trailer tent. And of course, you need different sorts of kit for abroad in potentially hot weather.
* Also, never cease to evaluate your kit in use. If you`re really strapped for space, it`s worth knowing when you come to replace or upgrade kit where the sticking points are. For example, after your first year you may think it`s time to get rid of that motley collection of old pots you`re currently using. Spend some serious dosh on a good quality set of nesting camping pans, with nesting kettle, and you`ll save a huge amount of packing space as well. Or buy a half-sized washing up bowl that the bucket fits tightly into, and the gas bottle fits tightly into the bucket rather than keep using the old ones that take up twice the space. Buy a better sleeping bag rather than have to take three fleece blankets plus duvet plus sleeping bag per person! Etc.
HTH. Works for me!

Thank you - all of you - who replied and have given me so much good information and advice :)
I didn't realise that we were using too small a tent! No wonder we're cramped LOL!
We'll get out our frame tent and see how much bigger it is compared to a gazebo, because our other option would be to purchase a gazebo with sides. I'll also have a search here for idea's on day/utility tents as suggested!
Val - thanks for your brill list - I'll make sure that's saved and used this year! I appreciate that you took the time to type all of that out for me :)
I have emailed the campsite re another tent/pitch and they replied with this:
You may have an additional 2/3 man tent on your pitch as long as you only have 1 car. This is classed as a pup tent and there is an additional cost of £2 per night.
Sometimes people also use a gazebo as additional room. There is also an additional charge of £2 per night for a gazebo but you can only have a gazebo or a pup tent not both.
An additional tent any larger than a 3 man tent would require a second pitch to be booked.

Thanks again for your help - you've been great!
