Does anybody use a Tilley lamp for light / heat these days instead of battery / gas power. Do you think they are safe? And where do you place it in your tent ?
I remember my dad using one of these lamps in a tent many years ago. Are they still considered good kit?
We use a number of fuel lamps when away with Cubs and Scouts but only use them in the large kitchen and mess tents, there is no way we would use them in the patrol tents. I personally use Tilley lamps when we go away but again only use it in the utility tent or outdoors if the weather is good enough for us to sit outside. They do give off a fair amount of light and in particular can get very hot so you do have to be careful with them near any canvas.
The Tilley is a great lamp, econonical to run and plenty of light with the benefit of heat too.
For obvious safety reasons be sure to only use outside or in a large tent with ventilation.
When camping with the missus in our Gelert LV6 we use an EHU so my Tilley gets used mainly for my weekend fishing trips where, due to my bivvy being small, it's used outside only.
I use a tilley in my summer house at home and use it outside when camping. It's great, very bright and gives off a lot of heat. We have 3 kids bouncing around so wouldn't use it in the tent.
