We are off for our first camping trip to France shortly.  We are going for a month and will be using gas frequently.  We currently have one campingaz bottle (I think a 907?).  I find it a pain disconnecting the bottle each time I want to use the BBQ or the stove in the awning.  So I popped down to my local gas supplier to get a second and got a real fright at the cost.  He explained that with campingaz you buy the bottle as opposed to renting it when you deal with calor.  Fine I thought I will just get a calor bottle, but he then explained I would struggle to get it refilled in France.  So what do I do - I’m thinking about getting a seven kg bottle from calor (seems pretty good value) and taking my 907.  I guess that should be enough and I can always refill the 907, any thoughts.

I was having a look at the calor website and they seem to do an additional bottle loan service I have copied the details below. Has anyone used this service

Following feedback from customers about the issue of cylinder availability whilst touring in Europe, Calor has launched a new scheme to offer caravanners a solution.

In order to meet the energy needs of caravanners who remain abroad for long periods, Calor will allow caravanners the ‘free loan’ of an additional cylinder in return for a deposit.

When the empty cylinder is returned, the deposit, less the cost of the gas, will be refunded.

The loan scheme is a result of ongoing customer feedback, and a survey carried out by Calor to identify the requirements of touring caravanners travelling to Europe. Over half the caravanners who responded to the survey travel to Europe, and a large proportion of those stay abroad for three to four weeks at a time, so are likely to require a gas refill.

The scheme will be available at any of the 55 Calor owned sites located throughout Britain and offers caravanners real peace of mind when travelling abroad.

Cheers

Colin

I would try your local tip or car boots for an empty 907 and exchange it for a full one. I had both mine from the tip. Campingaz is widely available in France. At sites, supermarkets etc.

The 7kg calor should last a long time. We use a 4.5kg and it lasts about 2 weeks in all. Calor is cheaper than CampingGaz but the latter is widely available in France.

Bon vacance!

Do you just pick the gas bottles up at the tip or do you have to ask for them?  At our tip it seems anything you want to take is extortionately priced.

I asked for a compost bin the other day and they wanted £6 - they are only £8 new and delivered from the council!
