am looking to downsize my garden barbie and maybe get one small enough to take camping. have been looking at the Hibachi bbq on www.sonofhibachionline.com it looks pretty impressive but only seems available from america, from what i've read i'm about to fall hook line and sinker for it so i need to know if any of you know of it or a british equivilant and does it do what it says it does????
Yes - hibatchis were very popular here years ago.. cheep and cheerful at the time. Funny I mentioned these to my hubby only yesterday.. I am sure i found the original somewhere online. Never seen this variation though.
We use an Hibachi when we are in France if BBQ's are allowed. They are a style of BBQ not a brand name. A shallow black trough withe 2 short legs and 2 grill plates that you can move up or down. You will find them in Wilkos for £2.99.(last years price.) We chuck ours in the bin after the holiday. We have one upstairs still in the box, bought at the end of season last year for this years trip. You put them together yourself with a screwdriver in about 5 minutes.
>They are a style of BBQ not a brand name.< It is in fact a brandname of Japanese or Japanese style BBQ's. Very traditional type, but very functional. Normally made of cast iron, hence somewhat heavy, but again, very functional. They do have lighter steel ones these days, but the old type still performs best. For garden use I would prefer the cast iron ones. For camping use I had a small steel one for years. Although many people seem to think that when BBQing with more people a larger BBQ is need. I used a small one always, which did the job well. After all, BBQ is playing around and not everyone has his beef on the BBQ all at the same time. Four people and a small one worked fine. At the moment I have a box-type BBQ (not Hibachi) in my van. A bit larger, actually kind of a cake-baking-tin put in a metal grid box with stelle bottom, which protects the grass very well.
I use one of those camping its fine for two or three people and i changed the nuts on the legs for wing nuts so it packs easier ,i keep it in its original box ,, hardly takes up any room ,, need to stand it on some bricks found on site tho ,, however i have just adapted mine to screw legs on and im fairly pleased with it .. its the space it saves in boot really .
We use a Wilkinsons Hibachi too! Excellent for the 2 of us.
If you buy a disposable BBQ stand from B&Q for about £3 the Hibachi fits on it a treat. A couple of tent pegs to secure the legs and it is off the ground (else it burns the grass) and rock steady.
We line ours with Aluminium Foil and the morning after wrap up the cinders in it and throw them in the bin. They should easily last 3 seasons.
Well just back from a long weekend at East Fleet campsite in Dorset so thought I'd update you on the "Son of Hibachi" portable charcoal barbecue.
What an amazing piece of kit!
It lights as quickly as a disposable barbecue but has two cooking areas with adjustable height grills. It's ready to cook on in less than ten minutes and once you've finished cooking you just put it straight back into the bag and it self-extinguishes. Yes, really!
My in-laws were so impressed they're buying one too.
