Always, Always put straps on a roofbox. We put on two, one at the front, and one at the back (side to side). We also ALWAYS stop every hour or so, to strech legs, and check stpaps, box etc.

Reason, seen a bloke almost get himself killed, by trying to retrieve his daughters teddybear, amongst other things from the fast (lane 3) of a motorway, after their roofbox blew open on the M3 near Winchester, last summer (we were stuck in traffic on the other carriageway) and saw it all happen. The family were on the hard shoulder, watching whilst he went for the items !!!!

I work for a highways company, and had to call for one of our incident support vehicles, to attend, but because I had mentioned that a person was in the middle of the motorway the police had to provide a rolling roadblock, whilst the items were retrieved, (and a ticket was given to the driver, for not having a secure load on his vehicle, which can be up to a £1000.00 fine) oh yes and points.

Stumpy....

Thanks

They are just webbing straps that come in various lengths and are about 25mm wide with a metal grippy thing, that you use to secure any sort of load. You just thread the end through take up the slack and the grippy thing bites into the material and will not let go unless you press down on the metal catch to release it.

Only a couple of quid or so (sorry about the explanation, but cant think how else to describe them)

And dont know how to do a link for you, sorry

Stumpy...

We got our roofbox from Aldi last year on one of their specials. It`s brilliant and was a lot less than similar, smaller roofboxes in Halfords. OH always puts a couple of straps around it though and he doesn`t totally trust any roofbox locks and after reading this thread I don`t blame him!

In my work, travelling the m/ways, i've seen these roof boxes spill there load numerous times. I dread to think if i was riding my bike behind a car that had a roof box shed its contents.

As was earlier said, an insecure load, on any vehicle is a road traffic offence, which can result in a substansial fine and penalty points on your licence. Just because some of these boxes are substandard, would not give you mitigating circumstances.

I too always put a strap on the roof-box. It has a ratchet grip on it, so the strap can be pulled really tight with little effort. I have it running front to back, and it also goes under the roof bars. So not only should it help to keep the box closed (if the locks ever failed), but it should help to keep it attached to the roof bars if there was a problem wiht the U bolts.

I think the other important point to make is to check your roofbox reguarly.   Check the mounting points and all of the "stress points".

Ours would have failed had OH not checked it and noticed that it was splitting around the mounting points. We binned it rather than trying to repair it.

outside width of the box X 2 and depth of box X 2 so about 3 metre staps for side to side

or outside length of box X 2 plus depth of box X 2 so about 5 metre straps for front to back
