Can't help with either, but just to say we use the French AutoRoutes a lot and don't worry about service stations. They are as frequent as in this country and the distance to the next filling station is sign posted just before you reach the nearest one (if that makes sense).
I would suggest that if you are driving through the night on little used motorways (some of the newer ones) don't get too low before filling up as some of them go over to credit card pumps (which don't take English cards) after 11 p.m.
Also if coming off the motorway into an area you aren't familiar with after 6 p.m. then make sure you have half a tank or more. Open Filling Stations on country roads are infrequent in the evening/overnight.
