The polyester shells in more expensive sleeping bags work like a "dry-weave top sheet"...ie, moisture/sweat passes through but does not seep back in again. Cotton or cotton/poly bags are really only just for caravans or sleepovers, where the temperature difference outside the bag isn`t so extreme. if you use a cotton sleeping bag on top of an airbed, for example, the underside will end up sodden.
I don`t think economising on sleeping bags is a good idea, especially as decent quality ones don`t cost that much more. Sleeping bags are your most important bits of kit after the tent. The best one around IMHO is the Vango Nitestar Midi. that`s what all my kids used, till they grew into adult sized bags. (And even then, I bought them adult Nitestars.)
