I have wind up torches, wind up lanterns and (not wind up) the head torches mentioned above. I've bought all mine from Netto.
I'd highly recommend both the wind up torches and the head torches but don't bother with the lanterns.
Wind up torches:
The winding mechanism is well designed so it doesn't tire your arm quickly.
Head torches:
They need batteries but we only needed one AAA battery per torch for a 10 day holiday last year and we are night owls so we used them more heavily than might otherwise have been the case. They are perfect for when you need light but want to have your hands free.... late night munchies / cooking springs to mind.
Wind up lanterns:
I bought 4 of them from Netto last week and I'm trying to figure out what the hell to do with them now . I am NOT impressed. There are three light settings: 3 leds, 4 leds and 12 leds. I wound the handle for more than 5 minutes and selected 12 leds. The light started mediocre and deteriorated. At the start, you would not have needed a candle to find your way around a disorganised tent but the usable light didn't last long. To its credit, it doesn't actually go black - it just fades to useless so all you can see is where the light is - I suppose that could be useful if you want to find it to wind it up again but it's just not worth the effort. The winder is not as ergonomically designed as the wind up torch and the luminosity... well to start with you could see your way around but 10 minutes later all you could see was a tiny glimmer from the leds - not even enough to see round a small bedroom.
Anybody want to buy a wind up lantern?
