I have just bought a Coleman lantern 282-700T. I have tried lighting it a few times to see how it works...each time I light it, it seems to have flames coming out of the mantle wich die down after the mantle it fully lit up.  Is this usual?????

Been years since I had a coleman lamp but yes that was normal, it happened rather less using proper coleman fuel and superunleaded. Even my gas lights do that so Iwould guess its normal

Hi Sukhi, I have a Northstar, and that's the same. It takes a minute or so for the heat on the mantle to warm the generator tube. Until that's warmed up, the fuel/air mix isn't completely vapourised, and hence the flames you see on the mantle. It's completely normal, and nothing to worry about.

As I recall from my Scouting days, Tilley Lamps got around this problem by heating up the generator tube and mantle with a meths burner. 

With my Coleman I tend to play around with the dial so that I'm not getting the big, yellow, sooty flames but neither does it go out.  Thirty seconds usually dos the trick.
