i know this has been discussed loads and loads of times before, but am looking for a recommendation for a toilet.  at the moment we have a Lugable Loo, but are looking to replace it with a 'proper' toilet so we use sites with less facilities.

so far we have had a casual look in shops but dont know what to look for when buying.

thank you all in advance.

As per usual I'd like to recommend the PETT toilet system www.thepett.co.uk . Not the cheapest method by any means, but I wouldn't be without mine. it packs down small in the car and it's really sturdy, my OH uses it with ease and he's certainly no lightweight (sorry dear )

hi we use the campingaz loo, ideal for the nightime and will last 3 / 4 days before it needs emptying, shop around and you should pick one up for about £35.

thanks for the replies, we are now looking at the Thetford Porta Potti 365, looks good on the screen, and seems to be a nice height too.  just hope that our usual camping shops stock them so we can try one for size before buying.

Hi Eel28, we have the Thetford Porta Potti 365. As you point out, its the same height as the toilet in the house, has a 21 litre waste tank, beware heavy when full. Amber Leisure at the Wyvale Centre if I remember right have them. We got ours at Camping and General in the sale at the begining of the year for £60.

If space is not absoutely critical, go for one with a larger waste tank. It saves having to empty it so often - or even worse, forgetting to empty it 'till it overflows

There's no such thing as a daft question on UKCS.

Yes you can, and don't bother with the 'special' stuff sold in camping shops - any normal type is fine

So far we've been on a learning curve with toilets.  Our Campingaz Euro WC Platinum is about the right size to cope with our family (2 adults, 3 children).  It was way better than sharing very messy Portaloos on Shell Island last summer.

Two downsides:

1. Shell Islands disposable facilities are very public - just a normal loo out in the open near the route to the showers/loos/shops/bars/amusement arcades.  So when newbie chemical toilet owners like us are naiive enough to try emptying the whole waste tank in one go - well the recipient loo just fills up to the top, solids float to the top (well of course they do), onlookers gather and snigger... the derogatory comments from the passing (uncouth teenage and not so teenage) public made me want the ground to just open up and swallow me!  My OH said we should just scarper but I just had to go and do the right thing and go and own up and get it unblocked.  When will I ever learn?  Duh!

2. Getting replacement parts is proving a real problem.  My partner accidently got his jeans leg tangled in the handle of the waste tank valve and it snapped.  (Telling this is my revenge for the teasing he gave me for having to own up to the above)  It's just a small plastic component but I've been trying unsuccessfully for a year to buy a new one.  Campingaz/Coleman literally didn't want to know but at least referred me to a firm they said dealt with spare parts for their products.  It's taken nearly a year for that firm to say they can get the part.  Recently, they emailed to say delivery would take up to two weeks from when I ordered it.  I ordered 15 days ago and no sign yet

Thanks for that Rickit, never thought of going there will add that to the list of shops to look in.

and thank you to all the other replies, think we have made up our minds now, have found a few of these on line, but would rather go to a nice friendly shop to buy it.

I've just ordered this one:

It's the cheapest I've found anywhere. And, I think the smallest.

You SHOULD be able to just empty the loo 'in one go' - how else are you supposed to do it?!!!  I've used lots of CDPs that are effectively 'normal' toilets outside, and never had the problem you describe - I would suggest it was blocked before you got there and your use of it had nothing to do with the resulting 'mess'!   Every time I have used a toilet-type CDP it's been a case of open lid, empty entire contents of tank into pan, rinse tank, flush - job done.   You were just unlucky - don't worry about it.

Just bought the campinggaz euro platinum porta loo. Will do the job but would advise anyone to go for the Thetford range as the quality is far superior. We were on a tight budget as we have been buying everything from scratch...The actual flushing part at the top of the bowl looks like a bent drinking staw and very cheap..I agree with previous post regarding the pull out handle..cheap plastic. My OH bought it and it was a couple of weeks before I managed to check it out,as I say it will do the job but cheap and nasty looking compared to Thetford's we have used in the past..

Just the rigtht size for us and even takes 16st OH weight!

We didn't want too big a waste tank as it would be very heavy full, this one is spot on and service from the guy on ebay was spot on too

well, we went to our friendly camping shop at the weekend with all intentions of picking up a Thetford 365.  when we got there and had a bit of a look, we spotted one that seemed to be identical, but about £20 less.  after enquiry at the shop we were told that basically the two are the same, just one has Thetford on it and the other one don't!  so we bought the less expensive one, a Kampa portaflush 21 deluxe an example of which can be seen here (5th one down)

so looks like we made a saving by using a shop, and not the net on this occasion.
