Hi, Got one of the electric cool boxes from aldi last week. Very pleased with it so far. Has anyone used these for longer stays. I was planning on staying on site while kids are off school for the summer so I was wondering if this was okay to use full time over that period or are they more suitable for shorter stops, would they burn out from over usage? I don't want to have to buy another one next year . Habe a fridge in van but need the extra space for drinks ect.
We had one we used for a weeks holiday, we did turn it off occasionally when it was nice and cold just to allow it to stand. We found our biggest problem was the extension cable we bought so we could stand it in the boot and power it through the cigarette lighter at the front! (it burnt out so we made one ourselves)
The biggest problem with the electric coolboxes is heat build-up when you convert from 240v - 12v. But if you are running it directly from your vans 12v supply then that may be ok. I had real problems running two coolboxes in the tent for longer periods, but the issue was the 240v-12v converter box. I melted three cigar-lighter connections and the converter itself died of heat exhaustion! Best to switch them off for a while each day (overnight if cooler) just to be sure.
------------- Hotels Suck. Villas are great but I can't take my Cadac on the plane....
oh dear. I am a bit worried that i have burnt out my borrowed (from my son) electric cool box as i acidentally left a bag on top of it, covering the fan, while it was running ... we were driving along with it plugged into the cigarette lighter.
It seems they are a bit fragile so i may be right to be worried
We also had a cigarette lighter connection melt and the converter burn out. However, we had used it for many trips and were able to replace the cigarette lighter connection for a few pounds and got another converter for £12.99 so it wasn't too bad. Although the coolbox works very well, if we were buying again, the price of fridges has come down so much that we would buy a fridge instead of a coolbox.
We ran our coolbox for nearly 3 weeks at the back door over Xmas with cans in it no problem. The converters do get hot to the touch but shouldnt melt as long as air flow gets to them.
thanks , will turn it off at night I think , should have checked this out before I bought it, but rushed to aldi to get double cooker and as they were all sold out I ended up buying this instead. Got cooker in Lidl this week not as sturdy looking as the aldi one but is ok for the money .
We got our Lidl coolbox last year. It has in built 240and 12v . We used it last year for two weeks camping plugged into the EHU and plan to do the same with it this year. Didn't have any problems with it, just turned it off occassionally!
We have just got back from a week long trip and used the coolbox all week. We unplugged it a couple of times overnight but otherwise ran it the whole time. Ours has a seperate 240 volt plug rather than an adapter so don't have a problem with it melting.
