I have got the nokia n95 and want to put tomtom on  it, I know the phone already has sat nav built in but you cant beat the good old tomtom, I will use an external blue tooth receiver, I know it can be done but which version of tomtom do i need.By the way I am well impressed with the phone.

Was looking for a new phone but hubby heard heard some negative reviews on the N95 and showed me the following

(Copied and pasted)

Question:     My new Nokia n95 arrives today, anybody currently using one and if so what do you think?

Replies:

  • T-mobile are collecting mine tomorrow due to very poor speaker quality (crackly/tinny) and turning itself off randomly...

  • The slider can be a bitch - going loose after very little use.

  • Mine's been nothing but grief. The phone keeps switching itself on and off, the keypad will unlock/lock itself when it wants, the vibrating alert doesn't work, the menu will sometimes open the gallery when I try to open the clock, the battery only lasts a couple of days, and I'm not a heavy user. But the worst thing is that a lot of the time when making/receiving a call the person on the other end can't hear me, so I have to hang up, restart the phone, and call again!
On paper it's a brilliant bit of kit, and I'm sure it would be if it worked properly! I know a few people who have had nothing but problems with them, so I don't think I got the only dud

  • Yeah I forgot I get that, where the person can’t hear me at the other end of the call... have to switch the phone off and on...

  • I really liked the phone itself, however what I didn't like was the fact that it wouldn't communicate with my car kit properly

  • That's another problem with mine it won't connect to my blue-tooth headset!

  • My brother works for Vodafone and said it is the most sent back phone they have ever had, so I decided not to get one and stick with my k800

  • I have the above mentioned problems too ... time to ring o2 and give them hell

  • My first, second and third phones have all had the same earpiece crackle, so in the end I've returned the third phone to a Nokia Service Centre where hopefully they will be fitting an upgraded part but Nokia just don't seem to build them very well these days.

  • It’s a very nice phone but very very slow!!

  • The phones always been voted slow & keeps crashing...

  • I have a few mates who have had the phone & have given it back or sold it on E-Bay...

  • I was considering this for my next phone but I don't think I'll bother reading all this! I currently have an N73 which has had quite a lot of problems, plus the Symbian OS is really slow and still full of bugs even though I have the latest firmware. I agree that the Nokia build quality & software is not up to scratch these days L

Hope you have better luck!

try 2 hours talk time ! i work for a mobile phone company and its the worst phone i have used for battery life , you can improve it by turning off a lot of the feature like wifi and lowering the screen brightness and also loading firmware v11 !...

Hi,

The version of TomTom you require for the Nokia N95 is TomTom Navigator 6 for PDAs and Mobiles. You can get a DVD with all maps of Europe for about £87 I believe. You'd still then need to get a memory card separately. Alternatively, you can purchase a version with maps for a specific country already installed on a card. Ensure you get the right type of card for your device. Personally, my preference would be for the DVD, because if you change devices with incompatible memory cards, you're a bit stuck.

TomTom Navigator 6 won't work with the inbuilt GPS receiver on the N95 though - it HAS to be an external Bluetooth job, as that's all that TomTom is geared up to look for, at present.

I run Navigator 6 on my Sony Ericsson W950, and also on my Sony Ericsson P1 (which hasn't been released yet - coming very soon - I happen to develop software for Sony Ericsson by the way), and it's a truly brilliant product (so's the P1 by the way!! - a truly truly cracking device). It works very well on the Sony Ericsson phones, but be aware that Navigator 6 will ALSO run on some devices that are not mentioned in the official TomTom list (eg SE P990 and M600 - they just won't support them, but that doesn't mean they won't work. Whar you are looking for if you want a Symbian device is something running either UIQ 3.0 upwards, or Nokia Series 60 version 3 and upwards. eg. Nokia N95.

I can't speak for the N95, for or against, as I haven't laid hands on one yet. If you Google for it I'm sure you'll find opinions for and against - best idea is to try one in a shop yourself and ensure you can return it if it's dodgy.

Cheers, Simon

well that is all a bit negative really.

I have used an N70 for the last year or so and took delivery of the N95 today, came complete with the latest firmware and I have no issues in phone calls, messaging or the camera /multimedia.

It connects to my WLAN fine and is fine on the 3G signal too.

Maybe I got lucky???
