Hi all, this is a daft question but here goes.  I have just bought one of the magnetic gas level indicators for our gas bottle. Can anyone please tell me how it works ? the instructions are not very clear and I can't understand see how it works. - Sorry I told you it was a silly question.

From the reviews on this site, the magnetic levels indicators are naff. It is better to use the weight method to calculate the amount of gas left in the bottle. Our campingaz gottle has a bottle weight stamped on it and holds about 6KG of gas so when full it weighs about 12kg.

Shake it - if it sloshes there is gas in, the more slosh the more gas! After you have used and refilled your bottle a few times you get used to the feel of an nearly empty bottle. Not very technical I know.

alternative get a regulator with a gauge on it , there's no guess work then.

we had one of those magnetic things - used it once & haven't bothered since, wasn't very good! - I can tell if the gas is getting low by weight of the cylinder and just shake it a little to hear any gas....however from memory, to use the indicator - place it on the outside if the cyclinder, there should be a mark on it telling you where to line it up to, you have to leave it on there a little while for it to read the temperature inside the tank - this then gives you an indication of the level inside the cyclinder...but as I said it wasn't that good and I didn't rely on it.

     These magnetic level indicators work by sensing the temperature difference between the liquid in the bottle and the gas, and are not very good because there is only a temperature difference when gas is being drawn off. So if there is no draw on the bottle you cannot see what the level is. For the same reason you will sometimes see condensation part way up the bottle, this also indicates the liquid level, in certain circumstances you will even get frost on the bottle.
