Hi
I have been trying to use my fixed roof ariel on my caravan for my T.V but have not had much luck with it, if the site has a booster to connect to its ok but other than that the picture is quite poor I have seen people using the mini portable satellite dishes and wondered if they are any good,
if so whats the best one to get.
dan
Hiya Just a question to you people who have satelite dishes, we dont have satelite at home, but want to know if we should buy one for the van? If we bought a dish in a case for away what channels would we get without subsciption? Would we get the normal 5 channels or more - like digital? Dont laugh at my daft question...
you don't get some of the ITV, channel 4 or 5 channels on the free satellite boxes, but you will get them with a free sat from sky. (which you pay a one off charge for)
Not sure about the suitcase systems, but you can get dishes and boxes from ebay and car boots etc and would receive a number of channels inc bbc 1,2,3,4 and radio channels.
Dish in suitcase systems are for free to air sats only like eutelsat at 13 deg east they will not recive sky digital waste of money, buy a second hand sky box and a free to air card and get a sky dish with ground mount and your sorted

Actually the suitcase systems will receive a range of satellites inc Astra flight 2 at 28.2E. This enables you to receive all the Free to Air channels such as BBC1, 2, 3, 4 and News 24 plus the ITV channels but not Channel 4 or Channel 5, both of which have access controlled via a viewing card and unfortunately the receivers supplied dont have card slots. Incidentally on the last trip out I noticed that Film4 and Film4+1 were available.
Chat up a sky dish fitter - watch for the van parked nearby. He'll fix you up with a second hand sky box, decoder card, dish, lnb etc for a small casher. You'll need a short bit of alloy tube - bit of scaffold will do. This replaces your jockey wheel on site (presume you're a caravanner) and the fixer will do the rest. Best to buy a satellite finder but not essential.
I got my free to air card from Sky , rang them up and asked for one , the cost was £20 , this was about 3 years ago , so wether the price has changed i'm not sure . I think this is the one i had Click_here
