Quite right Piglet, but in practice, in a cool box, the top is where the seal is and is most likely to let in warmer air and defrost your packs that bit quicker. If we are pushing a trip to five days without being able to refreeze, we soak a teacloth/glass cloth in water, ring it out at put it in the fridge for an hour before leaving, then lay it over the top.
In an ideal world, I suppose we'd only half fill the box with food and fill the other half with ice packs....but with the beer and wine...that would leave no room for food
