Looks fairly neat and tidy. I know a couple of folk who use ex-trailer tent trailers with no problems. You would just have to make sure that you check it over properly before you part with your cash, as you really have to make safety the number one priority. I would also see what price the cover is too. Good luck!

Well, I was hoping to get a second hand trailer for no more than £50 with a view to buying a better one once we're 100% sure that we will be camping regularly. But, the second prices for Erde trailers are quite good on ebay so I'm wondering if I'd be better buying a new Erde 142 and then just re-sell if we don't continue using it?
It could be false economy to buy a cheapo second hand one then have to spend a load more on new tyres etc.
If we got an Erde 142 then is it easy enough to fasten your own cheap tarp on top? I guess we'd have to get a spare wheel but apart from that, I don't think we'd need anything else would we?
I've just priced up a Caddy trailer at Towsure and it works out (cheaper than the Erde at Halfords) at:
430 trailer (4' by 3') £170
extra delivery charge £15
high sides £45
cover £18
towbar £125
That comes to £373 before you buy a spare wheel. Although it's probably a "good price" for a trailer, it doesn't really fit into our plan of going camping so that we could save money compared to renting a static for a week each year!! Hmmmmm, decisions, decisions.....!!!!!!
It is a big decision - no doubt. We found that when we returned to camping big-time a couple of years ago we soon found that having a big tent suddenly makes it all worth while, so then we started spending more (as we were genuinely saving loads on our usual hols) and therefore needed more space. We now have an erde 122 (w/hard top) and a huge roof box - we have outgrown our pretty big Honda CRV in no time. The best lessons I can think to pass on that may help are a) buy a bigger whatever it is (trailer, roof box, fridge etc) than you think you'll need, and b) wait until you can afford a half-decent one. If you think you may keep camping for a few years (esp. with kids that age - similar to us) then you want something that you won't need to replace in 12 months time. Sorry for the ramble, but this has served us OK!

I out grew my Honda CR-V after the first camping trip in it! I bought it thinking it had a big boot, which it has, but I couldn't take everything with me. Had a towbar on and own a few trailers (10'x5', 6'x4' & 4'x3') but bought a bigger car instead. I now have over 100 cubic feet of space, more if I use the back seats and still I would like more room! Whatever space you have, you will fill it.
Caddy looks good but Erde trailers seem to go for more on ebay second-hand which could be handy if we weren't getting enough use out of it. £199 for one the same size but extras are more expensive than Caddy, could maybe use a cheaper cover from somewhere but would still need spare wheel (and support?) which is another £35 altogether.
Does anyone know what time of year Halfords do the best sale prices on trailers?
Halfords were doing some very good deals on trailers last time I visited two or three weeks ago. Seamed to me the best prices they have had the trailers on sale for.
Just bought a new Erde 142 from Halfords for 300 notes, built and fitted my own additional high sides and intend to make a cover from a groundsheet and a bit of the ole reliable PVA :). Really quite impressed with the build quality and glad I didn't pay the £30 Halfords charge to put it together for you (I know all the bolts are nice and tight ;)
If your considering a new trailer can I point out that due to the recent flooding effecting their warehouse Caddy may be experiencing a little bit of a backlog of orders the places I tried had a lead time of over 4 weeks. No good for me as I needed it for beginning of August you can buy an Erde off the shelf at Halfords.
If you go for an erde ,I reccoment the ABS lids!! you can use your trailer as a safe box whilst camping and keep items, not in immediate use, safe and sound !!
I have got a Erde 122 from Halfords and that cost me £199. We didnt buy the ABS plastic hard cover at the time because it was an extra £180 notes but we are wondering whether we should have now. It adds about another 3 ft to the height of the trailer so it effectively increases the trailer capacity and it is lockable for those loo breaks in a service station. I am very impressed with the build quality of the trailer itself. Not sure if Halfords still have the offer on in store but it is still on sale below:
