When you say you have the roof bars do you mean the additional bars needed to carry a roof box or just the roofrails that come with the car ?

If its a 'U' bracket
you must push up the u bracket (under box above roof) and push down on the fastner (inside roofbox) as well as secure the inside fastner

so best have two persons!

I put one of the kids in the roof box to put the nuts on the other end of the brackets.

When I fitted my roof box I found it almost impossible to fit with the rails on top of the car. You just couldn't reach the bolts on the far side of the car.

Subsequently I took the rails off, mounted the roof box on trestles,  fitted the bars underneath then lifted the whole assembly on to the roof.

Now the box and bars are kept together and it's a simple matter to re-fit them when needed.

I can remember when this was all fields.

Hmm, putting the kids in the roof box would certainly cut down the arguments on the longer journeys

I agree with stackman, If you have roof rails , put the top box on the roof bars first , then put the combination on the roof.

Dont be tempted to do this on your own, otherwise the potential to scratch your car is very high.

I also found with thule aero bars the original U bolts were not wide enough, so had to buy bigger ones ( halfords box )

First time we put roof box on hubby put the fasteners outside and it fitted really easily - then a friend said they had to be inside - so now he has to stand on a step ladder to get the inside ones.

Not sure whether it was safe the first time - the reason friend said to do it the other way was so it couldn't be undone without unlocking the box, which to be honest we weren't really that bothered about.

hi guys, brought an halfords box at eekend picked up today ,has i had to order the fitting kit for my VW passat
fitted on okay until it came to putting the U bolts on the lid side, so i fitted one side securely then liffted the whole thing off and fitted them on the floor. seems a good idea as i can now store as one piece and refit in about 5-10 mins.Paul

Trial and error when fitting roof boxes. When we first had ours it took an age and much cursing and swearing. But now we are like a formula 1 pit crew!! Just remember to put a blanket or similar on the car roof to prevent scratches if there are any mishaps, when fitting.

I bought thule bars and a halfords box which are both great, but I was also struggling with the constant fitting and removing between trips. I was also storing the box on end in my garage, which was taking up valuable space. After a quick search I found that thule produce a pulley system to lift the box and bars together directly from your car into the garage ceiling. It cost me roughly £45 from the roof box company and it was worth every penny. It's a one person job with no straining or potentially damaging your car. Maybe worth a look!
